StackHash - CTD - APPCRASH

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm being plagued by crashes .. The worst is when it happens well into the middle of a flight, and I have to start all over again .. They seem to just come out of the blue and the program just dies ..

I've looked through the CTD Guide and tried a few things - including rebuilding .cfg, turning off my GPU overclock, verifying the .NET versions, and cranking the graphics settings down.  The crashes keep coming ..

I need help.

Here's the documentation for one example crash:

one way to find out what's causing it is to pare back your sim to eliminate the added stuff, that means turning off scenery and anything like entries in dll.xml, maybe it's the recent addition of a gauge or scenery file

I've looked through the CTD Guide and tried a few things - including rebuilding .cfg, turning off my GPU overclock, verifying the .NET versions, and cranking the graphics settings down. The crashes keep coming ..

I need help.

Many have fixed this problem with other applications (other than FSX) by disabling DEP - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Change-Data-Execution-Prevention-settings?SignedIn=1. FSX requires DEP to be turned on but many have turned it off (including me) and the crashes continue. I bring this to your attention as you might get several who will recommend disabling DEP for FSX.

Make sure your User Access Controls are disabled. You may have a sharing problem. Right click your FSX folder and click on Sharing. If it is not shared, make sure it is shared.

You received the infamous faulting module=StackHash crash. The digits next to it is the memory address where it occurred. I and several others have fixed StackHash crashes by disabling MyTrafficX in the Scenery Library (if you have My Traffic X installed). The latest version, 5.4c, has a bug that affects many (but not all). It all boils down to AI schedules. AI schedules are being loaded and suddenly there is no aircraft or an aircraft cannot be loaded for the flightplan setup in the schedule. There may be a corrupted file too. But, currently, this is the most common cause of StackHash crashes.

A corrupted dll.xml will also cause a StackHash crash. Once, I was getting crashes everyday until I opened up my dll.xml (located in the same folder as your FSX.cfg) and saw a couple of duplicate entries from PMDG and some old software module that had been uninstalled some time ago (but the module was still being loaded). I fixed those issues and my StackHash crashes went away.

Crashes occur differently in many computers because no computer is set up exactly the same as someone elses. This is why I recommend investigating the scene of the crime by disabling your modules in the dll.xml and disabling all of your addon scenery and rebuilding your FSX.cfg. When you disable every module in the dll.xml and every addon scenery in the scenery.cfg and rebuild the FSX.cfg (to get rid of tweaks that are may be conflicting), you have essentially brought your computer back to the basic FSX before anything was installed. You will still have addon aircraft but most likely those are not the cause of your crashes. The modules and the addon scenery are usually the culprits. Bad tweaks in your fsx.cfg will also bring your fsx/system down. The Bufferpool and Job Scheduler tweaks are the most common causes of FSX crashes. Individuals see figures that others are using and getting great performance so they enter those figures too and FSX crashes, maybe not on the first day of adding that tweak, maybe not for a month or longer, but eventually, the parameters will be wrong and FSX will fail.

So, let's try the above fixes first. If those do not work, then we need to start looking at system settings, like memory and BIOS settings.

Hi,

1) I do have DEP disabled via bcdedit.exe ... Are you saying that I should re-enable?

2) UAC is disabled

3) FSX folder (in AppData>Roaming>Microsoft) is set to Shared

4) I used to have MyTrafficX .. but I uninstalled that a while back when I installed MyTraffic2013  .. Also, I have my traffic settings set to zero (I fly on PilotEdge), so would these 2 things prevent the bug you speak of?

5) As for the dll issue, you may be onto something .. The crashes seemed to start after installing the new PilotEdge Client .. which I think may have made entries in the dll file .. I will take a look and revert ..

6) I'll try that scenery disable thing as a last resort .. that sounds time consuming, as I cannot recreate the crash on command, so I would need to fly around for a while until it crashes each time I added back a scenery item.

I'll be in touch.

Thanks,

Bill

Really? .. Jeez .. I have the following, could that be part of it?

[bufferPools]
Poolsize=0
RejectThreshold=131072

[JOBSCHEDULER]

The ntdll.dll indicates a bad overclock. Maybe a voltage setting set too high or too low. The only way to check it out is to return your bios back to the optimized default or a setting such as this. If you have the capability to save your current BIOS such as on an ASUS motherboard, do that first then go to the default. If that fixes it then it was a bad setting there. If the crashes continue, you can return your saved settings and continue looking elsewhere for the cause. I can almost 100% replicate an ntdll.dll crash by changing a voltage setting.

"Bufferpool and Job Scheduler tweaks are the most common causes of FSX crashes"
Really? .. Jeez .. I have the following, could that be part of it?

[bufferPools]
Poolsize=0
RejectThreshold=131072
[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=84

This is one of the things I see here. Individuals disable Bufferpools and the crashes stop. You can simply test this by commenting out the parameters so they do not load by place two slashes (//) in front of the parameters such as
//Poolsize=0. Like I said, Bufferpools do not work for everyone and it is not necessarily the same settings for each computer. You have to test.

You don't have MyTrafficX installed?

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

6) I'll try that scenery disable thing as a last resort .. that sounds time consuming, as I cannot recreate the crash on command, so I would need to fly around for a while until it crashes each time I added back a scenery item.

I would try disabling the scenery you recently installed or around the time your crashes started. But you are not going to find the fault unless you disable the addon scenery. Fly around and if the crashes stop, then you know it is one of the sceneries. Not it will get time-consuming to investigate but at least you have pinpointed the cause.

My Traffic 2013 is the same as My Traffic X except it was released by Aerosoft - http://forum.simflight.com/topic/72437-mytraffic-versions-mt2013-vs-mtx54a/.

I have no idea what kind of system or OS or whether you are overclocked but it definitely has the symptoms of a bad overclock or memory setting in the BIOS.

I will not be back until sometime tomorrow morning so hopefully you have enough to keep you busy until then. Hope you do pinpoint the cause of the crash.

Really?

I have an Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz (4 cores, 8 threads) .. which is overclocked to 1.32v & 4.4GHz (ie not that much overclock) .. which I checked correct in CPU-Z

And I tested it in prime95 w the Small FFTs stress test (maximum FPU stress) and monitored temperatures were ok w RealTemp GT

Furthermore, I have MSI GeForce GTX 660 Ti Power Edition OC 2GB GDDR5 (running at default settings -- ie not overclocked) ... which I also ran through stress tests w MSI Kombustor, and monitored temps via MSI Afterburner .. that was fine too.

I really thought my set up was very stable  .. bummer

OVERCLOCKED TO 4.4

Thanks for the system specs. The OC to 4.4 may be your issue. I had a similar system from ASUS and saw frequent FSX crashes until I determined it might be the OC. I had mine OC'd to 4.4 too. If I returned the BIOS back to Optimized defaults, crashes stopped. If you are using the ASUS Suite I or II (or III), that causes problems too. I had to completely uninstall that program as I do not think it is ready for primetime yet. One good thing about ASUS boards (and maybe other MB manufacturers) is the fact they allow you to save your OC on the last page of the BIOS under tools. That way, if you want to return to the default to see if that is the problem, you can and, if you are still having problems with FSX, you can simply reload the OC'd settings.

And I tested it in prime95 w the Small FFTs stress test (maximum FPU stress) and monitored temperatures were ok w RealTemp GT

I do not trust these programs that say they can test your system. I have exactly the same programs and used them with a similar MB as you have now and all of the tests passed. I was totally elated until a couple of weeks or a month later I started getting unexplained BSOD's or FSX CTD's showing the NTDLL.dll as the faulting module. I found that my memory modules were not configured properly and the voltage and timings were just off a little. What's upsetting was the fact I also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics and they found "no problems". I configured the settings as stated in the CPU-Z under the SPD tab. I made sure my MB profile was set to X.M.P. (which is the fastest setting for your memory), and I had the exact timings listed under XMP and the voltage was set to 1.5V. Problems fixed. So I don't trust these diagnostic programs whatsoever. They are flawed.

Bingo .. I have AI Suite II ..

OK .. I'll save BIOS settings and try going back to default .. I'll uninstall AI Suite too ..

Frankly, I'd rather try that before trying that disable scenery thing .. that'll take forever ..

that'll take forever ..

Why? Do you operate your PC from another room with a clever system of strings and pulleys?

...granted, knowing Jim's experience, he's probably right on the money, but you posted about this problem days ago. I'm just now running with no scenery, dll.xml, or exe.xml, took minutes.

The last crash I had was a problem with NVidia shadowplay that caused a staskhash and ntdll.dll exception. So it makes sense to look at the hardware setup with respect to GPU and overclocking. However, the time before was from an ai aircraft addon, same set of errors, so it's possible any scenery or aircraft could cause it. That's why I go for the easy stuff first, then start looking at finer detail. Hopefully will be better behaved with the bios defaults. Renaming the dll.xml and exe.xml is very straightforward, then going into FSX and the scenery can even be selected mid flight it's so tedious.

I'll uninstall AI Suite too ..

Good luck uninstalling it. It is one of the hardest programs to uninstall and I really don't think it's possible to uninstall it completely. Computer experts on the Internet have a hard time getting rid of it. The thing to do is just don't use it. If and when you ever reinstall Windows, it will be gone and you can leave it uninstalled (you will still need to install the drivers on the DVD that comes with the MB).

Steve W is right on with his comments above. Thanks Steve for your help!

my issue is crashes 20 minutes into a flight ..

the disabling scenery wouldn't take long itself .. its the adding back one-at-a-time, then flying for 20 minutes to see if that's the culprit that I as griping about..

you are right about Jim's experience though .. I realize he knows what he's saying .. I didn't mean to come across as disrespectful.

I went back to the optimized defaults for my BIOS .. and I removed AI Suite II (uninstall completed without error .. and it seems to be gone now .. fingers crossed)

I have NVidia shadowplay too .. How do you know that's what caused your crash .. I'm wondering if that could be part of it.

Your goal disabling the scenery is to see if one of your sceneries is causing the problem. If no more crashes, then unfortunately, you are going to have to enable them 3-4 at a time until the crashes start up again. You just want to know if it's a scenery. Same goes with modules.

It sounds like you have found the fault of your crashes though by going back to optimized defaults in your BIOS. It's amazing what a wrong setting in the BIOS will do to FSX. The CPU voltage is usually the one that causes the crash as FSX uses the CPU more than the GPU (in FS9 that was the reverse). I have my fingers crossed too that the crashes have stopped. Now, the hard part and that's trying to get a good overclock again. Google should be a good Source by search for How to Overclock the P8Z77-V. The AVSIM Hardware forum has a nice group of computer experts too that might be able to help.
