recently the new Pentium has been released. It allows for overclocking as high as 4.7 Ghz. The Pentium has a higher Single Core Performance than the i7 4770K, and FSX doesn't really support multiple cores, as Affinity Mask doesn't really take that much advantage of it. Would the Pentium when it is overclocked be a good alternative for the 4770K?

Well, texture loading is threaded. With 2 cores no HT you'd get a bit less FPS with and slower texture loading, but for a budget build it's nice.

 

A few years back you could get an I3 Clarkdale for some $100, an entry lever board for maybe $50 and a $20 cooler and boost the CPU to some 4.5GHz. That combo was insane bang for buck. Now you need a pricier board to overclock (and you get no HT in a Pentium), but at least it's possible again

Well, I guess you could still get a Clarkdale, but I already have a Mainboard for Haswell, LGA 1150, not for LGA 1156. How many FPS would you think I'd get if I'd have the Pentium, a 760, ActiveSky Next running and Rex4 Texture Direct?

LOL, I was just commenting on what Intel did a while back and what they do now regarding OC on mainstream platforms. It would make no sense getting a Clarkdale CPU now.

 

I'd say the FPS hit you're looking at is about a 10-20% compared to an I5 Haswell quad running the same clocks

My CPU is a Sandy Bridge, one generation older than Haswell. My FPS figure is not going to help you, it depends on a myriad of factors.

Get an I5 4690K if you can afford it, otherwise, that pentium will net you about a 10-20% lower FPS and a bit slower texture loading. Your call

I think that would be OK, as I can wait for the texture to load :D. At 30000 feet the isn't going to be to much texture except for a couple of clouds here and there. Also, that 10 Percent isn't going to be that bad, is it? Assuming you would get 30 or 40 with the i5, you would have 27 or 36 with the Haswell.

Have done some OC with this Great Cheap CPU.

Finally a did some tests in FSX works really great.

If you know what you do , experienced overclockers can have fun with it and running very well in FSX.

Dazz it seems to be 12% less frames than a 4 core Haswell , you were spot on.

At 4.8ghz it performs like a 5ghz Sandy Bridge.

I would say it's a perfect match for FS9 considering FS9 is single threaded
