Microsoft announces multiplayer server shutdown

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just saw these news on the official flight facebook page. Microsoft has announced that the multiplayer servers for Microsoft Flight will be shut down on October 14, 2014. See the full news announcement here: https://news.microsoftflight.com/blogs/news/archive/2014/07/03/flight-shutdown-announcement.aspx

Oh, well - it was about to be expected, a few more months multiplayer then. And who knows what will happen then...

Happy flying,

Andreas

Unfortunate. I was hoping for a better outcome. But, we knew this day would come eventually.

I'm still going to keep my fingers crossed that something else happens and we can keep multiplayer. We'll just have to wait and see. Until then, use it as much as possible.

Thank you.

Rick

Hmm.

Just 2 days ago, they shut down the servers for Age of Empires Online. Everyone thought it was going to be the death of Games for Windows Live as well, but apparently it isn't. Looks like Flight is the next victim.

I am not a specialist, but is it so expensive to keep them working? This is just a server...

Well, we still have some time till October 14 to play, thanks for this...

Well at least my work to remove GFWL from Flight was not wasted :)

Everyone should get the latest Toolkit and make sure they run Addon Manager while running Flight to ensure that your profiles are getting saved locally.  I will investigate some different options for releasing the version without GFWL for people who don't care about multiplayer prior to the servers shutting down.

It also gives me a tiny bit more time to investigate if I can get multiplayer working.

It does cost money to keep it up. The tech's salary, cross connects in the data center, fiber runs, hard drives, the server itself, database admin for the SQL server, network ports, bandwidth, disaster recovery, replication across datacenters... Tons of overhead.

I'm confident that with Microsoft's resources, keeping Flight's servers up is insignificant with their overall budget. Also, I would bet that there are no dedicated personnel that service just Flight. So, that too would be insignificant as far as the overall picture. Someone just made a decision to kill the program and now the servers for reasons we will never know completely.

My heart bleeds. :Liar:

I feel the same way, Steve. I have no sympathy for the people involved in bungling up the whole Flight affair. I think it was mishandled from the get go and we, the loyal Flight fans, suffer. Oh well. There is still a small glimmer of hope with the new licensee and Stonelance's work.
