Windows 8.1 DX 10 Graphics issue

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm sure this topic has been covered a thousand times before but i was wondering if anyone has found a 100% fix for the graphics spiking issue with windows 8.1 and FSX running DX10? I have searched a lot into it but there are that many fixes (or supposed fixes) out there i would be here when windows 10 comes out trying them all. My system won't run DX9 at all, soon as i click 'fly now' it just crashes to desktop but i can fly in DX10 mode but just with these horrible spiking issues. I do have both service packs installed for FSX. The problem still occurs with no addons installed.

My PC spec is as follows: Windows 8.1 64-bit, i7-4770 CPU @ 3.90GHz (8 CPUs), 16gb Ram, 2TB Hard Drive, AMD Radeon R9 270 (2GB)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Spikes in graphics indicate your memory is being starved and FSX cannot render the textures fast enough.  This is mainly an Autogen issue.  Turn down your Autogen and other FSX settings and see if this helps.  The FSX Configuration Guide located to the right of this forum under Hot Spots has very good settings to try.  Tweaks in the FSX.cfg will also bring your system to its knees if they were not properly entered.  Most likely culprits are the BufferPools tweak and Affinity Mask tweaks.  You can temporarily disable these tweaks by opening your fsx.cfg and placing two slashes (//) before the parameter such as:

//[bufferPools]

//UsePools=0

(an example as I do not know whether you have these tweaks in your FSX.cfg or not).

If you do have any tweaks, I would dump them.  You really don't need them for the modern system you have.

Thanks for the reply. I'll have a tweak of my settings later on and I've only made one change to my fsx.cfg file and that was to put the HIGHMEM fix in.

Hi guys i will second the issue, right now i got the exactly same issue as you related with win 8.1, i already followed the fsx configuration guide and a lot of diferent tweaks around the web and some of them make some changes for good and anothers for bad, cant believe how some of this guys that post videos on youtube talking about tweaks and stuffs has a lot of great improvements on fps and graphics quality with the exact settings that im trying and i cannot make my sim run and look like that or even close to it, i spent good money buying a great hardware such an i7 cpu, mem, asus motherboard, gtx gforce video card, etc etc and i seen guys that have less powerful hardware making it so good lol, is so fustrating cause most of this tweaks has been posted but theres no a lot of people that can answer you or give you a hand on how to find your good settings, like i said is so fustrating after spent good money in something that you love.

Trial and error. Thats the name of the game. Use Nvidia Inspector. It's your friend. Buffer pools has a large effect. Play with that and see what works.

Sorry I don't really have the magic silver bullet for you.  But there is a wealth of information available to you.  The docs available here at avsim. Word Not Allowed's guide, frooglesim on youtube, as well as Matt Davis. NickN's FSX Bible.

Even though its ages ago i thought i'd let you have an update.........

I found my spiking to be related to the water effects setting, anything above low x 2 caused the graphics to spike a lot and with the low x 2 setting it did it very little if at all even though everything else is set to max. I also installed Rex 4 and FTX Global and have no spiking issues at all now.

Hi I was having issues with running fsx on windows 8.1 in the grafics department. Trying to fly and seeing video artifacts especial taking off from an airport is annoying. My system is really not that powerful but I am able to use fsx what I did find is when I shut down the dx10 it works fine now visuals might not be as good but  I am able to take off with no video artifacts..i am running on a I5 6gig of ram a NVidia GeForce gt 630 with most sliders turned up all the way very little sputter even when using active sky next most of my aircraft work good with no problem. I belive some problem are mostly direct 10 preview related.
