So...what's the general consensus on FSX on Windows 8.1?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am currently looking in to getting a new system specifically for FSX. I've decided to buy a pre-built as I am very busy this summer with work, PPL training, and preparing for University this fall; thus, I do not have the time to learn how to build and overclock my own system. The point is, this system that I have decided on runs Windows 8.1, which I've heard mixed reviews of. Searching around AVSIM and various other forums often turns up mixed results for me; some people have no issues whatsoever, and some people have horrifying CTDs and Joystick issues...but there never seems to be a clear message as to whether or not FSX generally runs stable on 8.1. Does anybody have some food for thought on this issue? Is it critical that I steer clear of 8.1 or should I be okay to "bite the bullet?"

Thanks in advance  ^_^

Windows 8.1 works just fine with FSX.  Adding the Windows Vista vintage UIAutomationCore.dll to your main FSX folder seems to be a requirement however.  The only items I've noticed with some issues are Reality XP FLT and FLN gauges.

I recently purchased a new computer (July 2014) that runs on Win 8.1 (directX 11) so I can finally fly FSX.  But I keep having constant "Fatal Error detected" crashes.  I've been reading all the Forums out there and tried all of the "fixes" but so far, no joy.  So, I'm not sure what people are doing to solve these constant crashing problems.  I'm just about ready to go back to my ancient Pentium II system with XP so at least I can start flying again, even if it is FS9.

I had that problem too. Installed many times and reloaded the pc and finally got it to work reliably enough with photographic scenery too. I found that I COULD NOT install either service packs one or two in FSX and it worked fine.

My pc setup is Core i7 4770 OC to 4.4G and 8GB DDR3 at 2000 (2G) a Samsung Evo 840 512G SSD and Nvidia GTX770 graphics card Mobo is Gigabyte GA Z97M-DS3H. I am an IT consultant and a real world pilot so I have built a good workable system to practice ILS and NDB approaches with real world Garmin plates prior to doing the flight for real in my Cirrus SR20

A Seitek approved Yolk and pedals setup is essential but they need tweaking using knowledge of flying the real world aircraft in order to get the correct scaling and calibration. The Cessna approved trim wheel is also nice to have especially if you are flying Cessnas or PA28's

I have advertised and sold the system to other pilots in the UK  doing IR training and it competes with a professional simulator  costing 15X more However I also use Prepar3D which in some way is more reliable but it also has differences from FSX but it critically DOES NOT crash and is supported whereas FSX is a dead product 8 years old now . . .

If you have a choice - stay with Windows 7-64.

Lots of people use it, and it works very well.

There is no consensus that I know of.. but many Win 8 stories, not all of them good..
