Freeware with flight damage modelling?

Recommended Posts

What freeware a/c have some form of flight damage modelling incorporated into them? I know that the YS-11 has some basic modelling and now it seems that the Sea Hurricane does as well. How is this done ? Is it a gauge that "causes the problems" if you don't adhere to the correct flight parameters?Barry

hi, my Cessna 195 has damage enabled, but no damage textures were done, but they could be by adding a _D texture. The damage model is part of the MDL. In Gmax all you have to do is follow the naming convention laid out in the SDKs. Then some minor linking to make the breakage look better in FS. It's a fairly complex system that got swept under the rug after 9-11. Too bad, because I think freezing in midair after clipping my wing on a conifer is hardly 'as real as it gets' My current Wilga project is trying to take full advantage of this aspect of the sim. Breakable parts and Damage textures add an aspect of fear to those 1000' Alaskan airstrips, the results can be quite spectacular.I hope FS10 will not be so PC in this area.hope that helps.joe

Thanks JoeActually, I was thinking more about the damage modelling whereby you suffer damage or a/c engine failure if you don't fly within certain conditions or parameters.Barry

Bill Lyons' Challenger, although it isn't freeware, has engine failure modelled. Run with the rpm's too long in the red, and it's time to scout places to land.-John

Barry,Yes, I think typically this kind of thing is done with a gauge. That would certainly be the easiest way to implement it.Doug

I have always felt that many/most a/c in Fsim are just too easy to fly -- especially complex a/c with complex systems. I don't want to personally go down the track of flying very complex jets - but some modelling of this type in say twin GA would make flying the Sim a little more challenging and perhaps interesting.Barry

sorry I missed your point Barry.now I gotcha, I included an XML gauge that monitors the CHT of my Widgeon Radial engines. It's a simple gauge that makes the engines start to smoke when overheating, then it kills them if no action is taken.FS opens the Cowl flaps by default, so i had to trick the plane into closing the cowl flaps at the beginning of every flight. Otherwise, they would never overheat.try it out, it was my first attempt at modeling in such a failure. I have grander plans for future planes.XML is so new to most modelers, it's a bit like cavemen throwing rocks at each other.. but we're catching on.joe

Barry, I little while ago I, and another simmer, wrote a small guage for FS that monitored various readings and made the engine react accordingly. It was easily configurable so could be put in any plane just by changing certain variables, and it actually worked pretty well.I willl have a look and see if I can find it, failing that it would be pretty simple for someone to make something similar.Dan.

I am not capable of creating a/c - but it seems to me that if this "Flight damage modelling" is able to be done by XML gauge , then perhaps there is a whole new sub-section of Fsim that people could specialise in. For example, with a commercial jet, if you exceeded certain speeds on the runway - taking into account the current payload and fuel - then maybe you could have a kind of tire blowout -- that is if such a thing could be modelled. It seems to me that a lot more realism may be able to be built into a/c without actually creating the a/c in the first place.Barry

you guys are definitely on to something.I hope to see you run with it. I feel this area is a seriously underdeveloped aspect of our sim.one thing I have realized about the addition of XML this version, is you are truly only limited by your imagination. Not always the case in years past eh?If you are interested in persuing this further, here's some food for thought. XMLspy - http://www.altova.com/products_ide.html -- XML editor even noobs like me can handle. DTD and Schema support.SDK - http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimul..._sdk.asp#panels -- learn it, know it.. live it.dont forget the brainiacs in the A&P design forum right here.Im just a rook at XML, but if you need a hand, just holla.joe

>you guys are definitely on to something.Yes!! - I deliberately ran your Widgeon with the Cowls closed and the CHT steadily rose up to be in the red - and after a while the engines cut out. Very nice!!! Problem is that I have yet to figure out how to start them again!!! :) I did a search and found that your Widgeon is also modelled to take icing into account - I haven't tried that aspect yet -- but I really feel that you need to write a short "tutorial" on your a/c, Joe. I wonder how many more Simmers like me have missed this aspect of your nice a/c.Barry

Yes, it certainly can be done using XML, basically the guage we made monitored the CHT, then once the CHT reached a certain temp a counter started and once a preset number was achieved the engine failed, it was then possible using this base to monitor any variable and fail certain things. It is certainly something that could be pretty powerfull, and is something that is lacking, I believe that with a small amount of time invested someone could come up with a killer app that could be attached the any addon plane.Dan.
