FSX Performance

Hello everyone,

 

I've done most of my flying in X-Plane, but I also have FSX (SP2). The performance between the two is astounding: X-Plane runs very smooth, regardless of aircraft/scenery, while FSX, if I'm able to get it going at all, is incredibly slow and choppy. It tends to bog down my system and crash itself. In order to get advice, I figured I'd have to post my PC's specs, so here are the main bits:

 

-ASUS P8277-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 SATA 6 Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel motherboard with UEFI BIOS

-EVGA 02G-P4-3063-KR GeForce GTX 660 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 SLI Support video card with ACX cooler

-i7 processor

-8GB RAM

-Windows 7 OS

 

If there are any more specs that need to be posted, I'll add them.

 

I'm not looking to make a complete switch. FSX's third-party aircraft and add-on communities are attractive, though, and I'd like to use both because I'm able to with my VA. 

 

Any advice, as well as opinions on one sim over the other are welcomed.

Your system seems perfectly adequate to run default FSX with its sliders quite a way to the right, it seems to me ....

I wamted a flight sim last November, and bought both FSX and XPlane 10. After lots of forum readomg, I settled on FSX purely because it has seven years of stuff, payware, freeware, advice etc behind it. Even small airfields have been modelled by someone, most aircraft have been modelled too. Any error, or problem you have, someone has had, probably years ago, and fixes have been found. Rhats why I went with FSX in the end, and sold XPlane, unused, on eBay.

I completely agree, not sure why it wouldn't be working correctly. I'll be tweaking with it from any advice I can get from this thread. Your rationale for choosing FSX overr X-Plane is exactly why I'm interested in getting FSX to work right. Thanks for the input.

It'll tune your .cfg file and will basically increase performance. On my fairly modest system (see my profile), I can run FSX with the NGX at a minimum of 18 fps, which is still very playable (most sliders to the right). I've also heard people getting performance boosts from installing REX (seems about the same for me). It'll make your game look substantially better and hopefully increase performance. If you can, try to OC your processor (FSX is CPU dependent). I recently upgraded my GPU from a GT 630 to a 750ti and i probably got about about 2 more FPS . And don't forget... flight sims aren't high paced first person shooters so you really don't need super amazing performance.

Thanks man! I'm going to try this. I've gotta get it to work. There's to much to experience with FSX and I feel like I'm missing out, especially with a system like mine.
