Honestly I am not that surprised.  They were heading this way before the Nokia acquistion went through even.  Just on a corporate level things move slowly and there is a lot of "layers" to move through it sounded like from what I heard of various MS Reporters (Like Mary Jo Foley) Still a lot more then I expected they would end up cutting I think they are finding the Nokia division was either too large for their tastes or now too many jobs are found to be redundent as a result of the merger.

I saw this coming for years they had to cut employees and change the way they do things to survive. Axe Xbox or spin off would be my next step so the company can focus on core products.

Tragic, but they way things are going I'm not surprised. A lot has happened in 10 years and Microsoft has mostly been playing cath up from what I can gather.

I haven't bought anything MS in years and won't ever buy an MS product again - personally or professionally through my business. MS stands for everything I detest about large corporations.

Large successful corporations get lulled into arrogance by their own success. They build huge "campuses" where they get lost in their own group-think, slowly disappearing into their own navels until the world finally drags them back to reality with the sharp jerk of lost market-share and profit.

 

I hated working for large corporations that had become so insular that they had developed their own arcane society, with their own private versions of the English language.

 

Its like being in a weird circus fun-house.

Well, that's what consortium's are for. I believe Airbus technically qualifies.

 

Besides, it takes a while for the arrogance to reach its highest and the decline to start. I think Google is in fine condition, for instance.

Yep, it's a classic case of can't live with 'em and can't live without 'em. The world is full of paradoxes. The big question is, do we really need all these big projects? In the end, for every great invention that is good for human kind there seems to be at least 100 bad ones... Yes it's nice to know that I can ride a bus in the sky and see every country in the world. On the other hand related technology has given us airborne nuclear weapons. The myth of progress is pretty hard to kill.
