This is horrible! And why were they flying over Ukraine's border? Where is the no-fly zone?!?!

It is not a no fly zone for commercial aircraft! MH17 was flying on a high altitude airway in regular use.  Obviously these idiots used dated anti aircraft systems that could not interrogate the aircraft's transponder and correctly identify it.

If I read this NOTAM correctly, flying was allowed above FL260.

The director of Eurocontrol, which controls air traffic across Europe, says that Ukrainian airspace has now been closed after reports of the crash. Speaking to Radio 5 Live, Tytgat Luc said there were four aircraft flying in the same area at the same time that the crash occurred, but that they continued their flights.

 

 

Eurocontrol, which co-ordinates European air traffic control, has said Ukrainian authorities have now closed air routes in eastern Ukraine. All flight plans that are filed using these routes are now being rejected, Eurocontrol says, and the routes will remain closed until further notice. A crisis cell is being activated to co-ordinate the response to the impact of the airspace closure.

I want to share my sympathy with the families of the passengers and crew.

 

For those who are blaming the airline for flying over a "No Fly Zone". First, it is not a "No Fly Zone" as stated by the links provided. Second, If you were driving your car and had to take detour into well known "bad neighborhood"  for whatever reason and got mugged, you wouldn't take the blame, would you?

 

It's who ever fired that missile's fault not the airline's.

This is not a game changer, stop being dramatic..  America shot down an Iran air Airbus, the former soviet union shot down a Korean airliner.  All due to mistaken identity.   Let's hope this time the people involved get brought to justice..

I never thought we were safe at any altitude other than at sea level, and even then, I don't feel that safe.
