Wilson-Nairobi Airport a Flying Visit in Real Life

Featured Replies

I'm in the middle of a trip to Kenya and just flown out to Mara Serena airstrip from Wilson airport (HKNW). I've flown in airliners and in private planes a couple of times, this was my first time in an air taxi. I was very excited (obviously!), thought I'd just share some FSX moments I had with you.

Wilson is a small domestic airport just outside Nairobi and it seems to be the safari/tourism market that it caters for (as well as parking up dozens of privately owned light aircraft).

I was at Wilson for an hour and a half and must have seen 30 planes take off. It was incredibly busy. A dash 7 and 8 were being prepped by Air Kenya Aviation, but I wasn't sure which aircraft we would be flying on. Turned out it wasnt the dash 7. Then a Cessna Caravan turned up at the stand, I hoped that was our plane, I love the Carenado Caravan and have flown it in Kenya and round the Caribbean (virtually). But no, our luggage was waiting for the arrival of ... a dash 6! I have Aerosoft's Extended Twin Otter but not really flown it much. But enough to recognise the cockpit (I was sat behind the cockpit watching the right hand seat). Can't wait to fly it again, it will be my plane of choice for the next couple of months....

Types operating from Wilson, as I noticed while I waited, were one Caravan for every other plane taking off, Wilson seemed to be Caravan city, about a quarter flying without their cargo boxes. A Saab, a Dornier 228, a Beechcraft B1900, a DC-3 (couldn't see the airline) but fitted with turbine engines it seemed to me, several Kenya police Mi Mi 8 Hips, a derelict Fokker F27 Friendship, dash 6, 7s and 8s, a Bombardier crj700(?) and a King Air. There were others I couldn't see parked up, but I did see a United Nations Dash-8. Nearly every twin prop turned west toward the strips of the Masai Mara. We landed at one dirt strip before taking off again to land at Serena. There were no buildings at either, simply a sun shelter and jeeps waiting for their guests.

I'll post some photos to go with the text when I get back.

I'm in the Twin Otter Extended mood now, goodbye Flight 1 Islander! (For now...)
