OK, before facepalming and thinking "this dude must be noob", hear me out:

I've been flightsimming for years and have had long experience with messing with FSX settings and tunes, and I've recently been quite satisfied with DX10 using Steve's fixer.

To put some icing on cake, i have just purchased GTX 780 yesterday hoping that i can get some horsepower out of it. Before, i had GTX 560Ti.

 

I think i have a not too bad of a system here, with:

 

- i7 SandyBridge 2600K, OC'd to 4.6Ghz with additional cooling

- 16GB high-perf RAM at 2133Mhz (Corsair dominator series)

- FSX installed in dedicated SSD

- Win 7 Ult 64bit

- Single monitor setup, 1920x1200 resolution

 

Software-wise,

 

- DX10 Fixer installed and DX10 enabled

- Re-done fresh FSX.cfg with the install of new GPU

- Followed all key Nvidia Inspector settings out there, 8X SGSS and 16x AA

- Followed all key Dx10 related FSX.cfg tuneups including BP=0 and the whole shabam from this from and many others

 

FSX-wise,

 

- REX Overdrive textures, FTX Global and Vector

- Fps locked at 30

- AI traffic at 40% (MyTraffic X)

- Autogen "Dense", Scenery Complexity "High"

 

 

I get beautiful looking scenery and 25-30fps in most non-busy places, but once I get into a busy default airport, FPS just slams down into the ground.

 

I usually test "busy" load using default scenery EGLL and KJFK using the FSX default ultralight plane. 

Considering what my system is, I would hope that I get at least 15fps or high 10s. I would in fact be happy with 15fps, still very flyable.

 

But I get 6 to 9 fps at most, 11-12 from time to time... and I seriously cannot understand why I get such horrendous performance.

 

The funny thing is, the usual "fps killers" such as AI traffic and 3d Clouds don't seem to be causing my woes at the moment.

 

I removed weather (clear skies), removed light bloom, and even killed AI traffic completely - i STILL get barely 10 fps! 11-12 max.

Something doesn't sound right when an empty default airport with no cloud gives you 10fps using GTX780 in DX10...Is there something wrong with default scenery?

 

For example, AI traffic's fps difference is pretty small between 40% traffic and 0%..maybe 2fps? 

Stormy weather doesn't drop much frames..possibly 2 fps drop at thunderstorm condition.

 

I've tried many different tweaks, such as enabling bufferpools and changing TBM values, to no avail.

 

 

When I hear about other people getting near 25fps at EGLL using custom photoreal sceneries with full of AI crafts, I wonder what can be wrong with mine?

 

 

Any advise would be much appreciated....

Comparing it with my settings, i have almost everything same or similar... in fact at one point i have the exact same setting in that picture.

I changed a few settings here and there to experiment, but did not seem to make any difference yet.

 

 

 

One you can try, go into pv power settings in WIN7 and set the minimum CPU usage to 100%, and ensure MAx is the same that will stop windows parking cores.

40 % AI will kill your FPS at complex airports.

 

8SGSS will kill your FPS regardless of your video card.

 

Lower your settings and use Paul's guide to set FSX cfg and Inspector.

I have a similar rig, I can post my NI settings later when I am home but I have 4XSGSS and 8xCSAA set in the fixer/FS. I get pretty solid fluid visuals expect in heavy weather where i see a bit of a dig due to clouds and the SGSS, but still usable. My suggestion would be to try 4xSGSS and remove all tweaks from your CFG except for High mem and test. In years of tweaking (more tweaking then flying it feels like) I have finally come to the realization that a tweak free (no buffer pools, affinity mask, etc) and reasonable NI settings provide a very pleasing visual result and very good performance with DX10.

After being really tired and away from FSX for few months, I decided to give another shot at this..sadly, things don't seem to get much better.

 

I made following changes:

• Upgraded Fixer to latest 2.6
• Reinitialised fsx.cfg, started with vanilla config and added only most necessary ones I feel (affinitymask, himem) as McLaren suggested
• Uninstalled MyTraffic and removed all AI Traffic as to eliminate a known variable

At this point things didn't change too much either. From here, I tried few different fsx.cfg settings including BP, TBM, and FrameRate Limiter...

After all that, I am still about 10 to 13 fps in default KJFK at this settings, using FSX default Ultralight. On downtown manhattan, I can't seem to get over 15fps on default scenery.

 

I've seen from Google searches that people with similar or even less hardware than mine hitting 40~60fps in very busy airspace.

I see youtube videos with silky smooth landings on custom NY sceneries with NGX planes with same processor as mine.. I can't seem to get anywhere even close to that kind of performance.

 

Any other idea would be much appreciated... I've run out of Google search results..

I have a similar computer setup, actually not as good on the video card and ram and I am managing much better framerates.  Please post your fsx.cfg here (you can edit out the trusted section to save space).  Something is not right and it can be corrected.  I can get 25 to 30 fps in the NGX at FSDT Vancouver with Orbx scenery, REX, etc, etc. so this is possible.  My guess is you have one or two settings that are making a mess of things.  By the way,  one thing I noticed is that your AA settings are probably wrong.  If you have 8xCSAA in the Fixer then in NI you should have AA setting at 4x ( although it may not do anything anyway) and then keep the 8x SGSS setting you have.

How did you go about installing your new card?

Did you uninstall the drivers prior to removing your old card?

Did you reboot one cycle and not let it install drivers, prior to putting the new card in?

Did you use any uninstallers for the drivers?

@mistercoffee1, nowadays, Nvidia drivers allow you to do clean install for upgrade and card changes. I've done driver clean-install several times and wiped NI profiles already.

@MarkW, glad to see a Canadian flyer speaking of performance on Canadian airports - I get 11~13fps on default CYYZ at my settings right now.

Here are my suggestions.  Start with these and see what happens then go from there.  I have basically indicated the numbers on my fsx.cfg.   I think the problem is you have gone too high on the various traffic numbers and a few other numbers can come down a very small amount.  Start with these suggestions and see what happens then move up the items that are most important to you until you reach a compromise you can live with.  You can also use Simstarter to run several different cfg files based on the various scenarios like GA vs. JETS, etc.

@Bert, HT is surely disabled. Actually i have tried both - turning on HT and AM=84, and off HT with AM=14..didnt make any difference...

Btw, [DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780.0.0] is DX10 setting.. I cannot delete this. (.0 is DX9, .0.0 is DX10)

OK, I am sure I deleted that second entry without any issues but I have two screens so maybe the listing was different in my case.

 

By the way,  have you double checked your overclock is still working?  Reason I ask is that when I pulled the old card on my system and installed the new one the BIOS reset to the factory defaults and I lost my overclock.  It was not all that obvious at first that anything had changed other than the computer was slower.

8xSGSS is serious overkill for any machine. 4xSGSS is the absolute maximum that you should be using, and even that can bring very powerful PCs to their knees if you have lots of detailed scenery and AI planes enabled.
