Atc Prefers To Talk To Other Pilots!

Many thanks for that.

I'm still on whoever is the default co-pilot, in order to keep things straightforward, but I'll certainly be inviting William on board!

Oh dear, a problem!

I've followed the instructions in your download and I'm reasonably certain I've installed William correctly and selected him in the RC4 menu.

However, I seem to be still hearing the MCE co-pilot, either Trav or Andy.

How do I select William, please?

You will be pleased to hear, there are 5 other first-officers voice packs you forgot to download and install.

Also many more mechanics are available

Click on each voice pack link to download. Then unzip and run "InstallVoice.exe"

They are found further down the web page.

Sorry, easy when you know how, which I obviously don't!

Now, I've got William installed in both MCE and RC4, I can hear him talk to me and he obeys my instructions but...

I still can't hear him talking to ATC, only hear the ATC side of the conversation.

What else do I have to do, please?

  • Commercial Member

You either talk to ATC yourself, tha's why you had to install those silent files (to prevent RC4 playing pilot voice, after you have transmitted your message using your voice). Or you could hand over radio to William.

Go to ATC tab of the user interface and select option "Copilot can handle radio if busy".

To hand over radio to FO, use any of these

You have the radio

your radio

your comms

take care of ATC

....

....many other variations

At any time, should you want to handle radio yourself, use any of these

My radio

I have the radio

I handle the radio

......

.....

Hello Mr........? (sorry it seems so impolite to use your callsign!)

Just a thought and shoot me down with a Sidewinder if you know this already, but you are selecting the reply from the RC4 on screen menu, arn't  you?

Some things the RC4 MCE co pilot will say without prompting, but his replies need you to "select" the appropriate reply from the RC4 on screen menu.  Its just a case of hitting the assigned number key.  ( Or if you are very swish and have the MCE FSX voice command feature enabled you could say "select menu item 1..2..3..4..etc..)

I would also double check that you installed William in the correct RC4 file and renamed the original so you don't have two files with the same name!

Regards,

David

Gosh, I had no idea I had to select things for the co-pilot to say!

Where does it say this in the manual?

I thought I could just ask him to takeover the radio and then I could concentrate on flying the plane...

But this raises an even bigger problem, because I just don't have time to select the options from the RC menu.

William retunes and the new controller answers before I can make a selection.

Incidentally, I can't select the "Co-pilot can handle radio if busy" option.

I can select/deselect all the other options on that page but not that one.

Sorry for all these questions but it would make such a difference if I can get MCE and RC4 working together properly.

Sorry, my mistake regarding this one.

That's intentional. Only works with Native ATC, whereby FO will wait for some time before assuming you left the cockpit or overwhelmed, and will take over ATC without you asking him.

You do need to make a few adjustments in RC4 options though.

Assuming you installed William for RC4 pack and the silent voice files...

Click <Voices> in RC4 user interface panel

The various voices will be listed.

Under "Pilots" tab, select "My Voice V4" (this will play silent audio, so RC4 doen't duplicate your own voice transmitted messages).

Under "Co-pilots" tab, select "MCE William V4"

No worries, but I'm afraid I'm still struggling to get MCE/RC4 to work together.

I did make the adjustments to RC4 that you outlined above, but I still can't hear William talking to ATC.

Can I just confirm the point raised by Charlie 130 in Post #23, please?

I was under the impression that I could ask William to takeover the radio and that no further input was required from me, whilst I concentrated on flying the plane.

Is this correct, please, or am I expecting too much of him !

I did make the adjustments to RC4 that you outlined above, but I still can't hear William talking to ATC.

It's possible you have more than one audio device. RC4 wil always output its audio on the default Windows device.

If using a USB headset, before starting either MCE or RC4, go to Windows Control Panel and start the <Sound> applet.

Under "Playback" tab, ensure the USB headset is set as default. Only then will you hear William, whose RC4 voice pack is controlled by RC4. He was probably talking, just not through the expected audio output.

I will let David chime in for the other bit.

Thanks for your continuing suggestions and I'm sorry this is taking so long to resolve.

(I also realise we've drifted off the original topic!)

I have confirmed that my USB headset is the default playback device and I can hear William talking to me through the headphones, it's just that I can't hear him talk to ATC.

In any case, there's no pause between William tuning the radio and the next operator answering, so he doesn't have time to say anything even if I could hear it!

This is a known limitation with RC4. Remember it was written a long time ago, and wasn't intended for voice control. Controllers expect almost instant replies (which is just about OK with keyboard), otherwise they start yelling at you.

It is useable though, once you know what to expect.

  • Author

Many thanks for the information, it's very much appreciated.

But we've drifted so far off-topic that I've opened another thread with a more appropriate title, in the hope that I can establish whether William deserves his pay rise!
