A new kind of chip architecture has 4,096 cores and 5.4 billion transistors

 

Its called a neurosynaptic chip and mimics brain synapses etc...

Oh, it sounds glorious, and intimidating, but we are a few years away from the Singularity yet.

 

Lots of tiny little baby steps running in parallel are still lots of little baby steps. It is only when those baby steps are augmenting each other, which requires a computer version of the "ID" (as in Sigmund Freud), that real reasoning, sensing, etc, will become valid. 

 

Just an example: remember your first girlfriend/motorcycle ride/flight, and think to yourself, "how many parallel threads did I just pull into that memory". Sound, smell, sight, the way her skin felt... err... the way the yoke felt in your hands. Thousands upon thousands parallel threads, all coalescing in the service of the ID, i.e., you.

 

I have worked with computers all my professional life (40+ years), and I am not concerned about the Singularity in my lifetime. Now, in my kid's lifetime? Hmmm....
