What is EGT?

Recommended Posts

Hi can someone please educate me on what is EGT in Boeing 777 ENGINE displays ?

I keep reading a normal engine starts before EGT reaches its maximum limit (a red line). But what is EGT ? what does it stands for ? and how does it affects the engine start ?

(sorry for dumb question, not a real world pilot :/)

EGT = Exhaust Gas Temp - think the title describes what it actually is. I'll let the experts tell you how it affects the engine start because im no expert.

The exhaust gas temperature if i remember correctly is read from a thermocouple that is in the LPT, as well as notifying of hot starts and abnormal temperatures in the hot sections, it is also used as a guide to performance during testing. when built, customers specify different levels of EGT margin and this dictates how efficient the engine will perform. As for starting, the HPT and LPT sections are cooled with internal air and a network bleed air pipes, that feed air into the turbine blades and nozzles. During startup the compressor discharge air isnt at its optimum pressure to supply the cooling air needed so the temp should be monitored as the nozzles will burn through, and that will be a costly mistake!
