Aircraft Cruise Speeds in Aircraft.cfg!

Featured Replies

In the aircraft.cfg for many planes there are two different listings for cruise speeds. One is usually in the General section and the other is in the Reference section.  Why are they not both the same speeds? I understand for AI traffic flight plans the one in the General section is to be used. Thanks, Bob.

Just checked the cfg for the B744:  in the General section, the cruise speeds listed are Mach, mph, km/h;  in the Reference section, the cruise speed is listed as KTAS (knots True Airspeed).   The difference here is whether the number is shown as mph or knots (TAS).   I would think that the limits set in the Reference section would apply to the aircraft performance, stall warning, stick shaker, etc., rather than the General section.

AFAIK the [General] section is only used for the description of the plane  when you click on the "details" button of the plane selection screen and has no impact on how the plane flies.

The [Reference speeds] section is used for damage simulation and things like the overspeed warning.

The actual plane performance comes from the .air file and several other sections of the aircraft.cfg, not these two sections.

Hi guys. OK thanks. For the Beech Baron 58 the General section says"

[General]
atc_type=BEECH
atc_model=BE58
editable=0
performance="Cruise Speed\n200 kts              370 km\/hr\n\nEngine\nTeledyne Continental Motors IO-550-C 300 hp\n\nPropeller\nThree-bladed McCauley constant-speed, variable pitch\n\nMaximum Range\n1,569 nm            2,906 km\n\nService Ceiling\n20,688 ft           6,306 km\n\nFuel Capacity\n142 gal               537 L\n\nMaximum Gross Weight\n5,524 lb             2,509 kg        \n\nLength\n29 ft, 10 in          9.09 m\n\nWingspan\n37 ft, 10 in           11.53 m\n\nHeight\n9 ft, 9 in              2.97 m\n\nSeating                 Up to 6\n\nUseful Load\n1,613 lb                732 kg"
Category = airplane"

The Reference section says:

[Reference Speeds]
flaps_up_stall_speed    = 84.0                  //Knots True (KTAS)
full_flaps_stall_speed  = 75.0                  //Knots True (KTAS)
cruise_speed            = 180.0                 //Knots True (KTAS)
max_indicated_speed     = 223                   //Red line (KIAS)

Which speed number should be used for the aircraft speed in the AI flightplans (kts or ktas)?

Thanks, Bob.
