um... did you ask Adam if it was 'ok' that you could do this, Jordan?

Here is the link to his site.

I'm sure he would appreciate a heads-up.

Thanks,

Hey Guys and Gals,

I know a lot of you have been looking for the DX10 how to guide that was taken down. I re hosted it on my drop box for everyone! Enjoy!

Jordan - your enthusiasm is much appreciated - but it's a lot safer to just point people to the original source for the document - which can always be found with other DX10 "goodies" on my site: http://www.nzfsim.org/index.php?dsp=downloads&f_sort=fixer

The DX10 guide that you say was "taken down" was Paul's *old* one, before he "passed the parcel" to me .

The "How-To" is in almost constant revision, so you'd always be sure that you'd be getting the *latest* version if you use my link (or the one in my signature).

Adam.

P.S. Thanks, Paul!

By Adam do you mean the author? I wouldn't know because I didn't see his name signed anywhere on the document, and thus no, I did not ask for permission. There have been plenty of folks here on AVSIM asking for the guide so I am simply hosting it for the community once again directly. I am sure an admin can sticky your links to the forum for everyone should you choose. Thanks.

Thanks for the link and the guide. Considering how important this is to the FSX community, you should ask for it to be stickied in the DX10 forums here since AVSIM is a lot of virtual pilots go-to resource.

Right at the end ... in "Acknowledgements":

"Of course, I’d also like to thank Steve Parsons for giving my FSX a new lease of life!

Adamski_NZ : 4 July 2014."

I don't make a huge deal out of crediting myself, as a lot of the original inspiration (and work) was done by Paul. I've added a fair bit since then, I must admit.

I agree about the sticky (I'll look into that!) - but there have been plenty of threads here about me "taking over" the guide as well.

No harm done though - as long as people always get access to the latest version.

Hi,

I have a quick question, I have a brand new gaming PC which I am only using for MS FSX and nothing else. I have a separate PC for misc. things.

With my specs flights are smooth lots of FPS with sliders high and no crashes. I do use DX10 preview sometimes since I haven't seen that much of a difference and and issue with only 1 freeware aircraft no texture (which I don't care about much) I really don't use it.

My question is, is it worth going through the entire process on implementing DX10 Fixer? Here are my specs,

i7-4790K Processor (4x 4.0GHz/8MB L3 Cache Over Clock to 4.4Ghz

16 GB [8 GB x2] DDR3-1866 Memory Module-G.SKILL Ripjaws X

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 - 2GB - EVGA Superclocked-Single Card

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 --- 1x PCIe 3.0 x16, 4x USB 3.0, 6x SATA-III 6Gb/s-

128GB SanDisk SSD (for FSX) + 1TB 7200RPM HARD DRIVE

1 x Corsair Hydro Series H60 Liquid CPU Cooling System-Standard 120mm Fan

1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Professional + Office Starter 2010 (Includes basic versions of Word and Excel)-64-bit

Thank you very much.

Hi "F."

It depends a lot on how experienced you are using FSX, and in the DX9 mode in particular, and there are a number of reasons for moving to the DX10 Fixer.

Some folks find, when using the default DX9 api - they suffer from OOM's ... using DX10 frees up a good chunk of system memory, and at the same time, uses an improved graphics architecture which takes advantage of the latest GPU's, with their larger memory sizes. This will translate to better a performance overall, and will generally allow one to use higher config settings, such as more AI or more Autogen, for e.g. Most folks also find that when using DX10 - their FSX experience is smoother - far fewer stutters - even down to 18fps. There are other benefits, too, such as water which has wind-generated whitecaps: most aircraft will have cockpit shadows...

So - as I began - it will depend upon how long you've been using FSX and DX9: DX10 is a different graphics engine, and there's learning curve to be considered. The retail Fixer is unavailable at this time, and so your only real recourse is for you to use Steve's (free) DX10 Patch v3.2.3, available here in the Avsim Library - search for shader_release_v3.2.3.zip, and follow it's instructions, and also much of the "How-To" guide which this thread has as it's subject. Adamski_NZ now has the rights for its' distribution, and his link is in my sig as well as his in the post above.

Should you choose to jump in there are a good number of experienced guys around who will be glad to help, but it may take a day or two, as there are several other forums which cater to the "DX10 afficionado", and so the support is watered down somewhat.

All the Best,

pj

@forshaw - your system is powerful enough, but with DX9 you may still end up with OOM errors if coming to the end of a long flight at a busy airport in something like the PMDG 737. DX10 will *definitely* help out there.

The rest is very much "in the eye of the beholder" (I love it) - but generally, I found I could ramp up the GFX settings by a notch or two in most places and the sim would still be beautifully smooth. *Smoothness* and *visual quality* being the important factors here: the Fixer doesn't improve framerates as such.

With respect to the "HowTo" guide - it's not really Fixer version specific, as it's more to do with setting up your system and FSX in advance. So ... most of it will still apply for Steve's *freeware* shaders.

We all have our fingers crossed that the payware version will reappear soon but, in the meantime, the free version (though not so slick) is still great to get DX10 up and running. As and when (or if) a new payware Fixer comes out, you'll be good to go!
