FSX CTD Crashing to Desktop frequently

Recommended Posts

Hi, can you please help me I'm having a lot of CTD with Fsx sometimes at the gate or airborne. This started recently after installing vpilot on my Pc,I have searched on vpilot forums and sought some help from technical team by the said its not to do with vpilot causing Fsx to crash. I tried again this morning to make a flight then it crashed. I looked in the Windows Event Viewer and noticed an error report with time and date prior to fsx crash. The error show a Faulty module  C:\Windows\system32\nvd3dum.dll..

I have downloaded AppCrashViewer and generated a report which I copied and pasted below:

The error was caused by your display drivers. Reinstall or go back to the 377 drivers.

Hi Firehawk, thanks for responding, would you know of a proper way or procedure of rolling back the drivers or completely doing fresh install of display drivers.I have checked my Nvidia driver version I have 340.52.  installed as well including Beta Drivers there's a check mark in the Nvidia Geforce Experience Control Panel. ..

You can go back to the 337 drivers or simply reinstall the drivers you have installed right now. The driver software will be located in C:\Nvidia\Display Drivers. Run that program again and see if that fixes the problem. If not, I would recommend going back to the 337.88 WHQL drivers. At the startup screen for installation you will be given an option to do a 'clean install' which means it will wipe out all of your previous display driver settings. You do not have to do a clean install but it may be appropriate since you are having an issue with a Nvidia driver.

Hi Jim, I manged to uninstall and re install back the Nvidia drivers yesterday version 340.52 and the still had the CTD again error showing  nvd3dum.dll 9.18.13.4052 .. I then decided to uninstall completely again for the second time but this time I installed the one you recommended 337.88 WHQL drivers, tried to fly again crashed 44nm just after takeoff. I have generated AppCrash view report  but now its showing a BEX error and the not the error that was showing before.

Well, this time you had a StackHash error and a StackHash error could mean anything. BEX means Buffer_Exception_Overrun. Of course it all means a problem with memory. I see you have the AI Suite II installed. Not good! In fact, it's horrible IMHO. I had a lot of unexplained crashes until I saw the ASUS Suite trying to take over my computer system. Do you really use the WiFiGo? It loaded and is taking up precious system resources probably running as a memory leak. If you can somehow uninstall the ASUS Suite, please do. You do not need it. I mean, do you really do this while running FSX - http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/p8z77_series_motherboards/page2_WIFI.htm?? You can install individual programs like WiFi separately if you really need them. Why it is running while you are trying to use FSX is beyond me. Next time you have a crash you should do a Ctrl-Alt-Del that will take you to the Task Manager, open the Task Manager and see how many resources ASUS programs are using on your system. But I warn you, it is extremely difficult to remove ASUS Suites and the best solution is to simply reinstall Windows and leave the ASUS Suite disk alone.

I'm not sure whether the Malware program you have running in the background is doing anything to FSX (Rapport by Trusteer). Some of these malware/anti-virus programs running in the background while you are playing are trying to protect you from evil people in the world and sometimes they mistake a nice little program like FSX as a threat or one of its addons.

Overwolf program - haven't seen this one before but it says you can do neat things while running your favorite games - http://overwolf.en.softonic.com/. In the review, it states it slows performance.

You should disable this extraneous programs to see if they are causing your problems.

I do not see where Microsoft.net 2.0 loaded and this is a critical dotnet that needs to be installed for FSX. Check your C:\Windows\Microsoft.net\Framework\ and look for version 2.0. See the AVSIM CTD Guide for more information and to run the Microsoft.net Verification Tool to make sure it is properly installed. There are other versions you require too but dotnet 2.0 is important as FSX is a really old, old program.

Hi Jim, little did I know that some of these Applications are not really necessary to be on the computer, anyway I managed to get rid of the AI Suite

ll with all its program componenets,Reg files and WifiGo as well using IObit Powerfull Unistaller. I have a  done a reboot and It didn't show up like before even in the Task manager its not there. The only folder remaining is located in the C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS

with six folders inside it not knowing whether the whole ASUS folder I should delete it manually.

The Malware program (Rapport by Trustee) it was recommendation from my bank for online banking, but if it causing issues with FSX and need be removed I can do that as well.

Overwolf program I removed it too together with Teamspeak 3 which came as bundle from one of my Virtual airlines.

With regards to Microsoft.net 2.0 I have checked the location C:\Windows\Microsoft.net\Framework\  and it appears to be present. After running the .NET Framework verification tool it compiled and verified with no errors and showed versions from:

NET Framework  2.0 SP1

NET Framework  3.0 SP1 and 3.5

Do I need both versions Service Packs 1 and 2 for FSX compatibility..? I'm currently running FSX Gold Edition with Acceleration...

with six folders inside it not knowing whether the whole ASUS folder I should delete it manually.

I doubt you were able to uninstall all of ASUS II but you are heading in the right direction anyway. Even most computer experts cannot uninstall ASUS II or ASUS III. I would simply move the ASUS directory to a temporary folder (I set up a Temp folder inside of Downloads) and see what happens. The Event Viewer should be going crazy about now saying it's missing certain services/components. You aren't and I have learned to disregard those messages. The fact that nothing is showing up in the Task Manager is promising. I couldn't do that and I used the Orbx Uninstaller too (but I had ASUS Suite III). I do not know why ASUS does this to us. You should be able to reinsert your Suite II disk and an option would come up asking if you want to uninstall/remove a program but for me it just would not show up for a long time. Finally, after 6 months of trying, it finally allowed me to uninstall and it said the uninstall was complete but it left me with two folders which I simply left. If I ever reinstall Windows 7, that will wipe it all out.

Looks like you have all of the required dotnets. Dotnet 2.0 is important as it is needed for FSX/Acceleration/SP2. Addon developers have upgraded their dotnets from 3 and 3.5 to 4 or 4.5 with upgrades to their software. The latest SP to each dotnet is all that is required so you are in good shape. I am surprised that dotnet 1.1 was shown as not installed as it was definitely installed when you installed FSX and Acceleration but that's okay as I understand Version 2.0 will work. It is possible that when Microsoft released FSX Gold, they removed version 1.1 and replaced it with 2.0.

If you have Microsoft Essentials, it provides adequate malware protection and the program is free. With many Malware and Anti-virus programs, there is a way to disable them or disable the program when running FSX/Acceleration.

You might be able to reinstall Overwolf once you find the problem with your FSX and FSX becomes stable. Right now you need to remove any barriers that might be prohibiting FSX from running properly.

I moved the ASUS folder from C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS to a TEMP folder I created in the downloads as you said.I ran the ASUS installation disk and from the options menu it shows AI Suite II and all the other Programs that go with it are not installed.Actually It was giving me an option to install AI Suite II on my Pc of which I rejected..

I also managed to install Microsoft Essentials and hopefully will do away with Spybot Malware program..

I have done a flight today and managed to complete from start to finish without a crash. I wasn't running Addons like:

- vPilot

-Active Sky 2012

-Aivalsoft EFB

-Track IR

The only strange thing I noticed whilst flying today  which I also noticed during the time I was having crashes, my FSX display pause occassionally for a very brief time or split second like micro stutters. I dont know what could be causing this.....

Below is the AppCrashView Report I obtained  before uninstalling AI Suite II...Checked again today its still the same hasn't changed....

Well, you did not remove all of the ASUS Suite II. When you moved the leftover ASUS folders, you also removed the ASUS Fan Control Service (which is needed only if you overclock your Motherboard from Windows and not from the BIOS. So you need to move those folders back over to the Program Files (X86) folder.

Make sure your main FSX folder is shared by right clicking the fsx folder, selecting properties, and then, under the sharing tab, make sure it is shared. If not, share it with everyone. It should share all the sub folders too. If you have ActiveSky2012 in another separate folder, do the same thing for that folder.

Hello Jim,just to give you a feedback update from last post I put back the ASUS folder into C:\Program Files (x86)\ASUS which I had moved into TEMP not knowing it was essential for the Fan Control and CPU Overclocking that has been sorted.

I also mentioned about the FSX display pause occasionally for a very brief time or split second like micro stutters during a mid flight only realized today after searching on forums from this link:  http://forum.avsim.net/topic/419516-fsx-freezes-for-10-seconds-every-minute-or-so/

I had FSUIPC Auotsave enabled which was causing sometimes FSX to crash. After disabling it the stutters and micro freezing are gone I can do a complete flight without an issues, so far so good.

Jim what would be the best setting for the following inside fsx.cfg:

TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=1500

TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=800

I have mine set to the following values highlighted in red above.

I had FSUIPC Auotsave enabled which was causing sometimes FSX to crash. After disabling it the stutters and micro freezing are gone I can do a complete flight without an issues, so far so good.

I have mine set to the following values highlighted in red above.

That's interesting information regarding the FSUIPC Autosave. I have never used Autosave so have not experienced it myself. This is the first time I have heard about the autosave function in the FSUIPC causing stutters and micro-freezes. Those are difficult for me to remove and I get them occasionally but not enough to make fsx a show stopper. It is one of the most common problems with FSX today. If you run FSX w/o any addons or any addon aircraft (strictly the default), you won't see stutters or micro-freezes. In fact, FSX will run very smoothly but the graphics won't be the best and it is really no fun to use fsx only with the default installation.

I use to have that Autogen tweak in the FSX.cfg but took it out when I built my latest system (an i7 4770K w/the GTX 780) and installed mostly photoscenery. Autogen should be turned off for photoscenery. I never saw an improvement in fps with the "tweak" but some indicates it works - http://forum.avsim.net/topic/369311-a-very-interesting-fsx-fps-discovery/page-2 . I don't really believe in tweaks anymore unless it is a tweak of a setting to make the graphics a little clearer. Right now I tweak the LOD_Radius from 4.5 to 6.5 and the Texture_Max_Load from 1024 to 2048. There are a lot of variables to making FSX work the best and some have no problems and some have constant problems. It has to be the way Windows was installed, what services, what is running in the background, the overclock, the sliders in FSX and the display drivers, and, of course, the number of addons. None are the same and that's why we have happy people and unhappy people. AVSIM has an FSX Configuration Guide located to the right of this forum under Hot Spots which provide some settings and tweak (definition of tweaks as none are recommended by AVSIM). It's to give you a better idea on how to configure your system. The "blurries" are another headache for many and many think that high fps will eliminate the blurries. Wrong! I can have 80-90 fps while running FSX but still see blurry textures below but rendering fairly fast. Still, you would think with 80-90 fps all the rendering would be done instantly. It's not. If you have a high setting somewhere to bog down the rendering process, you will see blurries. In my case the problem is caused by my LOD_Radius of 6.5 and high Texture_Max_Load. If I lowered these two settings I might see hardly any blurries (but they will still be there).

Hope this somehow helps.
