The Blurries and How to Tweak My i5 4760 to Get Rid of Them

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

sorry to roll out this topic again but these blurries are starting to make me crazy! I tried so many things (read about 50 pages about blurries) and also created a new .cfg but it all does not help at all. I still have bluerries the longer the flight is going to be.

I got blurries usually when I am enroute at cruise on a flight which takes longer than 60 minutes.

This is my current FSX:

Here are some facts about my hardware:

Any help is appreciated!

Blurries are caused by high settings and unnecessary tweaks. Get rid of the Bojote tweaks. They do not work well in high performance systems like yours. Systems before Sandy Bridge might benefit. For instance, this tweak - SmallPartRejectRadius=4.0 will slow down rendering. This tweak doesn't even exist anymore and might have been good for FS9 but not for FSX - TextureMaxLoad=30. Your Autogen density setting is set to the highest. Autogen is a know FPS killer and most systems cannot handle a max setting with getting the blurries. Another cause of "the blurries" is any photoscenery. If it is installed and activated, it will load in the background no matter where you are in the world. The AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide recommends you use a program like SceneryConfigEditor and load only the scenery you will be using during your fsx session.

The lower the settings in your FSX.cfg and display driver settings, the better chances that your video card will render the textures in time.

Dear Jim,

many thanks for your reply sofar. I just deleted the Radius part out of my .cfg and decreased my setting to a point where I think it should work well with my hardware config.

Do you think the value for texturemaxload is too high?

@GSalden: How do I overclock my gpu? I have never done that before tbh. Any help is appreciated!

He said cpu and not gpu. You will need to research your motherboard and processor sites to find out how to overclock your system. You may also go to a site like http://www.overclock.net/ and find specific instructions for your setup. Good luck.

TextureMaxLoad... do you know what it does and how it is calculated? I mean, the default setting (w/o it even being in the config) is 6 and that's high and you are pushing it to 30 along with a bunch of other tweaks that you probably do not know what they do to your system (or FSX or FSX addons). This is why we see a lot of crashes over in the AVSIM CTD Forum. Here's a good link about TextureMaxLoad - http://www.simforums.com/forums/fsx-tweaks-demystified_topic37948.html. There's another one by bojote - http://forum.avsim.net/topic/281312-texturemaxload-vs-texture-max-load/. If it is not employed properly you may have many problems and you won't understand why (and neither will anyone else when you try to explain all of your problems). An i5 system is not a super system like the i7 but it can be overclocked and that would be the best anecdote for most of your woes. You have an ASUS system so it would be easy to overclock. Just rebuild your fsx.cfg and then set your configuration based on the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide. It will show you settings for the Nvidia Inspector for your GTX760. Tweaks, with your system, are not going to get you anywhere unless you know exactly what they do (with your system configuration and FSX configuration).

So, how do you overclock your i5 4670K? Here's a good simple video on how to do it but you would need to be running the video on one computer while overclocking on your computer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJJueyum20E. There are a lot of tutorials by simply asking Google - 'How do I overclock an ASUS i5 4670K?' (you may not have an ASUS motherboard so you would have to change the name appropriately like Gigabyte i5 4670K).

I'm going to split your topic off from the main topic started by Bojote to a new topic as dredging up an old topic that is mostly not applicable anymore is only confusing to most. I'll give it some kind of eye-catching title.

Thanks again for your input Jim.

I totally agree with you that I don't have any idea what any tweaks will improve on my FSX performace. But as simple as it is: I just want to have a good performance while flying and since I am not confident with my current situation I have search the WWW to find anything which improves the situation. Thus, I always had in mind that changing a system or a config will cause new problems.

Again, thanks for your input and the link for the overclocking! I will put the down the value of the MaxLoad and will be getting back here afterwards.

PS: I still need to find out how to get to the advanced mode for my MSI motherboard which got for my PC. It does have any option (yet).

Evidently MSI does not have the capability to overclock via the BIOS like other MB's. Instead, MSI recommends you download and install the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility - http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-boards-software-extreme-tuning-utility.html. Here's how the utility works - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFOwslwebC0. Have fun!

Are you running FSX from a SSD?

Conventional hard drives are slower than a SSD and suffer from data fragmentation over time which further decreases performance as the seeker head has to skip from one point on the disk to another somewhere else.

Combined with high values for "LOD_RADIUS=" in the FSX.cfg, add-ons requiring lots of additional textures and background programs requiring lots of reads and writes, you've got yourself a prime candidate for a bottleneck.

So if you run a conventional HDD search the forum or the internet for tutorials on defragmenting your hard drive. This should help things a bit until you get a SSD.

My system is an i4670 with Turbo Boost enabled (i.e. auto-overclock to 3.9 GHz), very fast 4GB RAM, a GTX570 and a SSD and I get almost no blurries in FSX at all.

@Jim: Thanks as usual. Will give that a try!
@Bjoern: No, I don't have any SSD harddisk which I use for my FSX. Just the standard one. I have already completed the windows defragmenting twice. Is the one via the windows menu not efficient?

.

Most FSX dramas can be sorted by Overclocking to the highest setting you can achieve within parameters. Last week I went to 4.8ghz and it slices through fsx like a hot knife..

I would OC first and then re test and apply any tweaks if you need to after that

Here's a really good advice for you: Get a clean CFG. Add only the highly necessary tweaks such as HIGHMEMFIX=1 and WideAspect=True.

THEN you slowly start to add minor tweaks to optimize stuff. I've only added Bufferpools=0 and fiberframetimefraction=0.15 to my system and I got rid of almost every problem like blurries, black flashes and screen tearing. I don't have tweaks such as affinitymask, messing with LOD-radius, texturemaxload etc and my sim runs (almost) perfectly. However, my CPU is OCed to 4,4 ghz and I have a GTZ 760 video card.

Not to mention - get DX10!!!

Surprised no one spotted this:

AffinityMask=84

This is wrong for a quad core w/o HT

use 14 or 15, or delete the entry completely
