OOM crash with FSX.exe only using 1.9GB of VAS

Recommended Posts

I have a pretty robust system (6 core i7-3930K) with 8GB RAM and a GTX580 1.5GB VRAM.   I use mainly photoscenery without autogen in the US and fly small GA aircraft such as the A2A Skyhawk and Cherokee.  Up until now I have really never had an OOM crash, except in NYC when I had enabled HD textures.  I have since reduced my max texture to 1024.

Yesterday I started to get crashes with the FSUIPC VAS alarm (ding, ding, ding) going off, but FSX.EXE was using around 1.9GB according to Task Manager.   Is there a way to log VAS and specifically the process using it?   Does the moment of task swapping out of full screen to a window cause VAS to be reduced by close to 2GB?

Task manager doesn't show VAS... That's physical memory you're seeing.

Download Process Explorer and view virtual size (in the options)

Also note, it's not necessarily the amount of VAS you have left, but the largest contiguous address space available. You can have 512MB available, but if the App is requesting 50mb space, and your largest contiguous space is 48mb, then the APP will still OOM.

Another way of monitoring it is through FSUIPC itself.

Go to the FSUIPC logging tab. Enter 024C in one of the 'specific value checks' boxes (0 = zero, not the letter O). Change the 'type' from S8 to S32 and check one of the available options where you want to show the remaining available VAS (I would go for the upper title bar because showing it onscreen may result in stutters).

Thanks

Thanks for both suggestions. I can check tonight, but do you know if that will work with a non-licensed copy of FSUIPC?

It works for both the freeware and registered versions.
