A 670 vs 970 comparison. Brace yourself, spectacular results

Featured Replies

I had an opportunity today to test an EVGA 780 SC and an EVGA 970 SC in the same system running P3D. As expected, performance was nearly identical measured by FRAPS: 37.35 FPS with the 780 and 37.478 with the 970 in one flight and 59.44 and 59.02 in another flight with reasonably high settings for shadows, AA, and SGSS.

Any idea on how does the 780 compare to the 770 in P3D if I can get 10 FPS out of this I'll upgrade.

I have a 780ti but I'm considering to upgrade to 980 b/c 980 draws significantly less power (170W vs 250W of 780ti), making it easier for me to go down the route of 980 SLI. Even though P3D may not support SLI any time soon, Nvidia claims soon to support SLI for VR display like Oculus Rift, and that could give a big boost when flying P3D with Rift on.

Thanks for the information.

The more I fly, the more I think a 980 is overkill unless :

- you set up high or very high resolution (let's say 1440p and above + AA)

- you have multiple screens

- you really have money to spare

If you're the "usual" simmer with one 1080p screen, the 970 really is the deal.

How's the noise from the card while running all that AA? Lots of complaints on newegg about coil whine etc. That, and the EVGA acx1.0 cooler which a lot of people said should have been 2.0

Coil whine has been reported on the Gigabyte and EVGA, and EVGA has an "issue" with heatpipes not being aligned on the die. This causes un-optimal cooling, thus noise.

You can't go wrong opting for the MSI or the Asus STRIX. At the end, at least in my country, the MSI being ~30 $ cheaper, and in stock, I bought this one.

About the noise, I'll try to be more specific later but after a 1 hour flight, with 8SGSAA, the GPU does not exceed 70°, the fan is around 70% and almost not audible (and I'm a silence addict with a case loaded with regulated BeQuiet! SilentWings fan)
