Transitions please help.

Recommended Posts

Hello simmers, so im skilled with the PMDG 777 now.

I understand what sid´s and star´s are, and how to use them.

But i always had a question mark for transitions. I can not find any easy explain.

What are transitions for? And when i need to use them?

Regards Math.

Maybe someone else can describe better than me,but here goes...

Transition Altitudes in the USA are set at a standard 18,000 ft. Below this level, the local atmosphere pressure is used in the altimeter.

In the EU, it varies from place to place, eg in Dublin (EIDW) the transition altitude is 5000 ft  see http://www.iaa.ie/safe_reg/iaip/Published%20Files/AIP%20Files/AD/Chart%20Files/EIDW/EI_AD_2_EIDW_24-10_en.pdf

Below this level, you use the local pressure value (ATC will advise this)

ATC: Yeah, it's OK. He's not hungry.

SID and STAR transitions - not trans altitude, but you have a decent explanation of TRANS ALT.

Also, this is a dupe post, and it's been answered here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/452123-transitions-please-help/

Thanks guys but i talking about the trans in fmc? When and why i need to set them? I have tried to set them for a random approach. But always when i set  trans then fmc, makes a very strange approach route, a very unrealastic one.

Check your other thread.  I put a few links to videos in it that will help you.

If you're selecting a transition and it gives you a strange route, your core route is probably wrong, or you're using the wrong SID/STAR.  There are occasionally times where the transition is not used at all (short routes, or preferred routes like the IAD-JFK prefroute of CAPITAL8 PALEO V44 DONIL V229 PANZE V44 CAMRN [NO STAR]).

Have a look at those other videos and it'll help to figure it out.
