Windows 9 To Be Free Upgrade!

Recommended Posts

Already announced as sometime next year. I can never figure out their roadmap.

There was Windows 98, then they brought out Me to cash in on the New Millennium, which went down like a ton of bricks. Then they brought out one the most stable platforms, XP, which still refuses to die a death, and then tried to kill that with Vista. Again, when we once more have a rock-solid platform W7, they are at it again.

Like Linux731 has so aptly stated, it will become the new XP.

Well, following your logic then Windows 9 should be the new XP (98>Me, XP>Vista, 7>8, and 9 the next stable one ;))..... Anyway, I really don't understand all the hate. I personally really like Windows 8, I have an amazing performance with it, and I'm looking forward to the new one..

Cheers!

I intensely dislike the Modern UI

Ok. So, not only are they giving W9 for FREE, they are also copying Apple's Fifth Avenue iconic store. For a company that was once ruled by a guy that wouldn't allow his kids spend any of his billion dollar fortune on an Apple product, they are really looking up at Apple like Apple are GOD.

I am curious to see what Microsoft have done with Windows 9, if they have done anything at all...it looks to me that they have blatantly ripped off the Windows 8.1 design and put a 9 on the software name instead of 8.1.

From what I have heard, there are virtual desktops, start menu, cortana integration(if you have a windows phone you would know what cortana is), ability to run Modern apps in a window. I hear the upgrade price from 7 to 9 is $30.

Who has a Windows phone?

I have one, but I don't have a clue what that cortana thing might be -_-

Do you get a BSOD part way through your phone calls?

Nope.

Just did a little research on Cortana, sounds similar to Apple's Siri, nothing that I'd really like to use anyway

I mainly use Ubuntu but still boot win8.1 to compile my stuff and for FSX. (FSX on Wine still has it's problems)

A recent update broke my Windows-Tabs app and I guess this will break my win7 style menu app... I better uninstall

those before or dismiss win9 at all as it looks like pure crap.-

Dunno about all this trashing. I really enjoy my Windows 8.1. I stuck a new start menu button on it, so for all practicle purposes, it looks like W7. However, I really like the look of it. The tiles are very usefull to me.. Menus, Finance etc. A breath of fresh air. I have W7 on my older laptop, but end up with my W8 one. Roll on Windows 9.

Move with the times, guys. We all know that FS9 is/was regarded as the XP of sims. FSX is regarded as the Vista, & P3D the Windows 7/8!

"Move with the time".

Why should we instant upgrade to 8.1 or 9 when Windows 7 is doing a great job?

Win7 is a fast and stable OS. Windows 8.1 and 9 is just a playful OS with lots of colours and eye-candy but with no advantage.

I don't want eye-candy, I wan't a easy to handle and working OS. For me this is Win7!

There is this saying, which is surprisingly true: "If you want to make enemies, try changing something." Everyone screams about change but what they really want is just slight improvements on what they've already got. Not actual change. Microsoft wanted a uniform look for all platforms so they made the start menu full screen, and added apps, which you can totally ignore. Using the W8 start screen is very similar to using the W7 start menu, but it looks different so everyone hates it.

Anyway, they're giving us the old start menu back and we don't have to pay extra for it so everyone should be happy now! Right...??

The screenshot looks like the new menu will take you to the tiles.- This would make it worse, even close to unusable. As Ubuntu is my main os, I'll take my time to analyse feedback about that obsolete os update.

I wish I had purchased a full retail version of Windows 7 Pro when it was still available.  Stuck with XP and Windows 8 is the only retail versions available.  I guess I could buy a couple of Windows 7 OEM discs and hope that I never need more than two.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I hear the upgrade price from 7 to 9 is $30.

Why on Earth would anyone want to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 9? The only possible reason for having Windows 9 (or Windows 8 for that matter) is when you don't have an OS at all, or you have one that is no longer supported. Since Windows 7 will be supported for quite some time yet, paying $30 to upgrade the number at the end would be a bit daft.
