Windows Update Tuesday (14/10/14) Critical Error...must read...

Folks, in this update, there are Critical and Important updates, around 15 of them for all Windows platforms.  But...there is one update KB2949927 that has a critical error attached to it, and will BORK your Windows installation, whereby you will not be able to restart and successfully load Windows to your password/start screen.  

 

What this security update does, is security-update: BitLocker on your system. The trouble is...that if you are NOT running Bitlocker (that is..you are not running an encrypted file system), then this update will not only not install (failed installation notification) but will affect, and cause to fail all the other 13 KB security updates. You will then be instructed to finish the update cycle, by rebooting your system, and then after you do this...... you will get the 'Windows could not restart'..and then the O.S. will go to the automatic repair routine. If you are lucky...and some are reporting not...they stay BORKED....then the routine will try to repair by means of a restore point...allowing you to successfully load out to your password/start screen, pre-security installation attempt..

 

So...you can download and install EVERYTHING in this release of updates..BUT un-click the install box on the above update file and then right click on the file name to Hide Update. You can always bring it back with un-hide updates after Microsoft fixes the fact that this file does not check to see if you are running an encrypted (BitLocker) file system, or not.  

 

If you have already tired to run this series of updates and have had update file failures, or outright loss of a next-boot up of Windows...THIS one file is the reason...unless of course, you DO have a system BitLocked...and then it will install properly. Most of us do not....

 

Microsoft dropped the ball and let this goof get past them....and I imagine are working on a new file that will check whether your system is encrypted or not, before altering BitLocker coding....

Wow, glad I saw this and re-read that highlighted(Thanks) Update as I was just in the process of downloading the Updates but cancelled. Being actioned upon now.

 You are welcome....and what happened to me...is that I got caught in this...this is what exactly happened to my system, post install attempt.  I then reloaded a system image backup done a few days ago...and started searching on line after I could once more boot to Desktop,...and read the moans and wails of everybody else. I then unchecked this one file...and re-attempted to update all the security breaches...and I had a normal and successful install of all the KB's...

 

It is only this one...mentioned that will BORK everything else...unless again. if you run in BitLocker Mode (encrypted), you can run this one as well..and it will not affect anything.  Glad that you read this first...if anybody simply wishes to ignore this warning, and does not have a system back-up..and RESTORE fails...then they are FUBAR'ed.....

 

I think this is a very important post...for obvious reasons to AVSIM members...and I suggest that it should be pinned for at least a month or more in Hangar, or on the front page under Notices, etc. It will save AVSIM users much grief, and if it gets buried down the post line...will be of no use to nobody. Just a suggestion, Mr. Mod(s) or Tom.   :rolleyes:

The update didn't show on my Windows 8.1, which also had 16 updates + Windows malicious software remover. It's the update for Win7 OS only.

What is so, so annoying about this is that this NOT the first time Microsoft have screwed up badly with their Updates. Only a month or two ago, an IT publication here was carrying warnings to its readers about an Update that was rendering systems belly-up. The ironical bit about it is, when I bemoaned Microsoft's activation monopoly and the screwed-up system that is, MS sycophants here(whom I will not name) flamed me down for taking an anti-MS stance.

 

Had it not been for your experiences,----- in this day and age of personal data being hacked into and compromised, hence the importance of keeping one's system bang up-to-date with the necessary Security Windows Updates------we'd have been left locked out at best, thanks to Microsoft's ineptitude.

New W7 64bit installation ... no bitlocker, this update installed OK and system booting up fine.

So...Clayton, that was not the KB involved.  The one that causes this is: KB2949927....not KB 2949937.....

 

It also depends on what version of Windows you have...my version is W7 64 bit Ultimate. This version was affected with this KB file update. This one KB file from the 15 available in the Tuesday Update. The other 14 installed with no problems, once KB2949927 is isolated, and removed from the installation queue.

I appreciate the initiative to warn our membership of possible security issues with Windows. However, this issue only affects a very small percentage of users of Windows 7, 64 bit. I successfully downloaded and installed 18 updates today and none of the updates included KB2949927. The OP indicates this affects ALL Windows 7 users. It does not.

 

What this security update does, is security-update: BitLocker on your system. This is false or so convoluted that it indicates it affects everyone. That would definitely be a serious issue for the millions updating Windows 7 if it was valid. I do not run bitlocker and all of my security updates installed properly even though I am not running bitlocker (or some type of encrypted file system). There is some limited information about this on the Internet (Search - KB2949927) but it does not affect everyone who owns Windows 7 and it does not affect Windows 8.1 users.
