"Perfect" microburst scenario with ASN WXR

Hi folks!

 

This time storm chasing brought me "the perfect" microburst scenario!  (In sense of simulation)

Location, Date, Time: EDDG, 2014-07-28, 18:37 UTC (ASN historical weather!)

 

During the approach into EDDG ILS25 the PWS warning depicted a windshear area exactly on short final and overhead the arrival field.

Instead of starting the appropriate "escape maneuver" I intentionally continued the approach with "indifferent" actions: actually I only kept course, maintained thrust (67% static N1) and tried "not to hit the ground" via joke inputs.

Here is the result...

(Remark: please excuse the relatively low resolution of the screenshots. They were made while flying in Nvidia-3D-Vision2-mode 1280x720 and in addition they seem to be resized to 1024x576 through photobucket access...)

18:38:05 "a second" before main gear touch down the VSI (high latency) shows -1350 ft/min

18:38:12 plane enters the microburst TAIL WIND portion at 18ft AGL (IAS drops by 27 kts into crosswind wind)

18:38:13 IAS drops further to 134kts into tail wind which triggers the "low airspeed warning" (EICAS) at 10ft AGL

18:38:14 with IAS 122 kts and VSI -800ft/min the plane hits the ground (tail first). EICAS message "tail strike" and FSX detects a crash and stops the simulation...

Yes it definately works. I was flying to St Lucia the other day from Trinidad and Tobago and was warned about thunderstorms and windshear around St Lucia. Sure enough the weather was pea soup with plenty of lightning and turbulence. 4 miles out on the VOR RWY 10 approach, i had "monitor radar" aural alert but then went silent. it looks like the windshear was slightly offset to the runway which meant continuing to a safe touchdown was possible after seeing a break in the clouds.

Probably I will make some "real motion video" recording of a further storm chasing session (via Elgato Game Recorder) this weekend*. It is a nice feature to also hear the chain of events (wind drifts, thrust excursions, cockpit alerts etc.).

 

I will try to make it a 3D YouTube video upload (side-by-side or red-cyan-anaglyph) in order to give you the choice of experiencing the 3D view in the VC of the PMDG T7. B)

Hi folks!

Today I had no luck with storm chasing. I had just the yellow "predictive windshear alert" three times on my NDs and they all ceased shortly after the aural alert "monitor radar display"...

So nothing really spectacular.

I will try again video recordings over the next days, so perhaps a real sensational windshear + microburst encounter might be the result.

no luck so far with the microbursts, but storm chasing nevertheless makes a lot of fun.

Last Sunday night I was again on storm hunting in order to make my announced video of encountering windshears with microburst using WXR PWS.
The flight session originally included a "nice" windshear encounter but unfortunately the recording stopped earlier without being noticed by me.  :blink:
 
So the result is just rainy and turbulent storm chasing but with some very nice cloud surfing. So the video might be nevertheless interesting for people wondering what ASN can do for FSX.
 
(As always: just for fun and not ment to be a guide for the proper operation of the A/C. Don't look for perfection; you won't find much of it...  B)  )

Hi folks!

 

I did a Google search yesterday for other reasons on PMDG T7 SPs and the last post of this thread here came as the third result... I noticed an error in the date I mentioned for a "spectacular weather scenario". :blink:

So before "the world" gets crazy because of wrong data, here the correct versions...

 

European weather scenario for testing WXR and PWS:

Location, Date, Time: EDDG (Muenster/Osnabrueck), 2014-07-28, 18:15 UTC, early dusk (ASN historical weather!)

 

US weather scenario for testing WXR and PWS:

Location, Date, Time: KNPA (Pensacola, Florida), 2014-04-30, 11:10 UTC, early dawn (ASN historical weather!)

 

A lot of storm cells around in both scenarios... :wacko: 

Have fun and enjoy it, like I always do when there is not so much time. B)
