INS: How does this work with the multiple CDU's?

Recommended Posts

I was just asking myself,
I want to do longer flights using INS.
Now the aircraft i want to do this in is an Airbus a300, it has 2 CDU's

As far as i know i can store 9 waypoints,

but can i also store 9 waypoints in my left CDU, and then store the other 9 waypoints in the right CDU?

So when i've flew all the waypoint 1 to 9 in my left CDU, i then select 0 to 1 in the right CDU and so on?
Or doesn't it work that way?

Don't mind me, im just learning a new navigation system,  :P

No, Usually at least for the Concorde, There was a chart stating when you'd load the next set of ADEU cards.

In the past I would load the next set during the 8-9 leg.

No! you have to input the same 9 wypts into each CDU. If one fails the other is a backup. You should also be using ADEU units to input wypt "cards". Saves a lot of time now with many more fixes than before.

With ADEU cards the best practice is to make wypt 1 the same as wypt 9 of the previous card. This creates an overlap in case of problems and also acts as a check on the other CDU

You should also use the updating. This ensures that the INS doesn't drift over time and because both INS units feed into the AP it can compare the two. Thus pruducing a more accurate track.
