New rig for Prepar3d, specs advice please?

Recommended Posts

Ive been away for 5 years bringing up a new family and only now do I finally have enough down-time to consider flying again. My current PC is 5 years old so I know I'm going to struggle with that. Would the specs below be able to handle Prepare3d at moderate settings? Thanks for your honest advice. The basic specs are.... (current PC in signature below)

i7-4770 Quad @ 3.4Ghz

16GB RAM

GeForce 760 with 2GB VRAM

Win 8

2 TB HD

Hi,

this is essentially what I have with some minor deviations. Runs Prepar3d2.4 pretty well, even with (too) high settings and very dense scenery like Van3+,  but I only fly GA.

Kind regards

Thank you very much, pmb. It's going to cost me a Grand (GBP) which isn't too bad considering my last cost me twice as much. I'm hoping to run Prepar3d through the O-Rift DK2 with DCOC V2 without too many stutters which many have reported with older machines.

Is that the non overclockable i7-4770? If so, I would recommend the "k" version, and overclock it to at least 4.3Ghz. That will make a significant difference. In addition, if you can stretch your budget, then I would also recommend a more powerful GPU (at least a GTX770, although I hear that the GTX970 is the best "bang for your buck" card). For the record, I run P3D on an i5 4690k @ 4.6Ghz/2GB GTX770/16GB Kingston Hyper X Fury RAM powered system, and the performance is generally very good at very high detail levels, 1280x1024 resolution, lots of AI planes active, and clear skies. However, be warned that high cloud density will significantly impact performance in the current v2.4.

i7-4770 Quad @ 3.4Ghz  i7-4790K and overclock

16GB RAM - 2400 Mhz they decently priced

GeForce 760 with 2GB VRAM   GeForce 780Ti with 3GB VRAM or 970/980 if you can

Win 8  Keep your Windows7 and use $ for other stuff better

2 TB HD Get an SSD like a 256GB or bigger if you can

That's what I am planning on... My PC is about 3 years old I already have 780Ti upgraded from 680 and difference/improvement was amazing ++ !

I agree with Andy regarding keeping your existing copy of Windows 7 64bit. That should save you £70-£80, which could be put to much better use upgrading the CPU or GPU.

On a side note, I am curious to know where you intend to purchase the new PC. A grand sounds rather high for the spec that you are quoting, considering that you will (I assume) be keeping hold of those three 27" monitors, plus bits and pieces like mouse, keyboard, speakers etc?

add a case $100, power suply $200, and harddrive $200, yeah maybe you get to total of $450 CDN aprx 250 GBP

do you plan/can you reuse some stuff from old PC? case/power supply/HDD?

TOTAL of 1300 GBP + TAX

and this is just quick look without looking for any specials etc... and top video card Top MOBO you dont need to go TOP on everything LOL

shop around :)

other then video card this is what I am planing on getting I just worry that improvement this can give me over my current i7-2700K oc to 4.9GHZ will not be all that much and to pay $1000-$1300 to get 2-3 FPS LOL isnt worth it IMO...there is just no way for me to test it :(

I really dont know if this 4790K would outperform 2700K to be worth that much..... IN CASE OF P3D i do know 4790k can run circles around 2700k in benchmarks that have very little to do with actual performance in FSX/P3d

My new PC that I purchased in early August cost me around £900 (including VAT)......

Asus Z97-A motherboard

Intel i5 4690k CPU @ up to 4.6Ghz

Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler

16GB Kingston Hyper X Fury DDR3-1600 RAM

2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX770 GPU

750W Corsair RM750 Modular PSU

2x2TB 7200rpm Hard disk drives

Coolermaster Storm Enforcer Case

P3D runs very nicely indeed on this PC at rather high detail levels.

Thanks for all your advice. Ive decided to buy the mid range 'Alpine computer systems' rig. That should do the trick.

That's one expensive Mobo!!! I paid $170 for my MSI and I thought that was a lot since the systems I had built before had been built on $50-100 mobos
