Loading an IAP for situational Awareness when taking Vectors

Recommended Posts

I know it's a good idea to load an IAP from an IAF when taking vectors for situational awareness.  What would you do though when there are more complicated procedures on the plate like multiple IAFs or no IAFs?  Many of the airports I use have either no IAF and just an IF, or multiple IAFs.  Thanks.

Where multiple approach IAF points are selected by the nearest STAR exit transition in line with direction. They may be in common or by vector.

An IF only may be offered if vectors are issued to line you up with it.  An IAF must be present if no radar is available to allow self navigation.

Can you point to an approach where only an IF is present?

There is also this explanation regarding IF/IAF co-location:

One place could be KJFK.  ILS 22R for example has only an IF, then from that IF to the FAF.

ILS 22R (CAT 1 normal) current chart has neither an IF nor IAF designated. The RNAV shows an IAF and an IF. The IAF is not used in a certain approach heading range to it.

Unless I confused the charts :)

So in this case would you just load "Vectors" on the GPS or FMC and that would load just the FAF?  Thanks.

If the approach is in your FMC or GPS load it or put it in the flight plan for guidance only. If you want let RC vector you.

Be aware that in either case there may be obstacles to avoid. Put RC in destination NOTAMS mode for flexibility. If you put RC in IAP mode then you are on your own until you are about seven miles on final to get landing clearance.
