Would You Fly On a Windowless Plane?

Recommended Posts

Heres a wild vision. A windowless plane so that the entire fuselage is a lookout window. Freaky? Claimed to be the future.

Personally I see the costs being astronomical for something like that the way they describe unless they have some secret.

I don't think they are suggesting a transparent fuselage! On the contrary they are suggesting a completely windowless fuselage.

What you are seeing in the video is a presentation of a panoramic video display screen that runs the entire length of the cabin on both sides

giving the passenger the feeling of a transparent fuselage. That tech probably already exists.

Don't know about the cost but I feel that sitting next to a giant television screen is no compensation at all for being unable to see outside.

If they showed nothing more than a feed from cameras outside the plane (blue sky, clouds and the earth below) then I think it would be cool and even better than windows.  However, it's inevitable that such technology would turn into billboards in the sky and other annoying marketing schemes.

Are we talking about a 'windowless Cabin', or is the entire airplane sans windows?

The C-17 doesn't have windows or portholes in the Cabin, right?

Anyway... I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I would want the Pilots to be able to see out from the Flight Deck!

Naw, just give them a couple of 60" display monitors to see a virtual sky.  They'll be fine.

Yeah its not a transparent. It's that screens are so good now they will appear to be windows. Perhaps better because of the adjusted contrast. Do I like it ? No. But I will say its most likely the future. Think of the savings in weight to remove those supports on aircraft for windows.

Might as well, I find now on long haul flights between Australia and the UK I'm being constantly told to close the shades even at night! That time I asked the attendant if they wanted to keep the dark out.

Seems like looking out the window is becoming a thing of the past.

Whats the point in it? I mean we don't really need to reinvent the wheel.

Yes.

Smoother ride. No more "debris" on the window smudging my view, and I can see what I want to see (the city I'm flying over) without fuselage getting in my way.

The negative is that it'll be a lot harder for me to rest against a window that isn't there. LCD's aren't exactly comfortable.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

As much as I understand that no windows has a desirability from a weight-savings perspective, unless they kept the screens on 100% of the time I would feel wildly uncomfortable.  And as neat as a floor to ceiling virtual window would be, I'm sure the presence of such would make others even more uncomfortable!  It'd be one way to some people to get over a fear of heights, I guess!

More realistically, one could see windows being replaced by similarly sized screens, rather than huge, floor to ceiling things.  And even more realistically, they would only be present in 'premium' seats that you could choose to pay extra for.

yea, then every 5 minutes the view will be interrupted with 10 minutes of ads and infomercials.

Or pop up ads for some medicinal liquid, powder or pellet which starts "Do you go to bed at night, and wake up in the morning? If you suffer from this, as many Earthlings do , you need this new medication... "

I want the Pilots to be looking at real stuff through the windows; not looking at some screen showing a Virtual representation of what's outside. I want them to pay attention to ##### they're supposed to be doing... not using the 'screens' to post on Facebook, surf porn, or be streaming Josie and The Pussycats on Netflix while negotiating severe thunderstorms...
