I just lost all my flightsim planes and backed up stuff!

Recommended Posts

I have a external drive where I saved everything including all my flightsim stuff. I had a whole load of planes (payware and freeware) saved to a external hard drive (I kept them there when not using them). Well the drive failed and it is not working (it's not getting any power). The drive did not give any warning that it was going to fail.

I feel devastated I lost all the planes I had. Anyone else have something similar happen? Did you start buying the planes again?

That's one of those nightmare scenarios we all dread. You will probably be able to get most of your payware stuff back without having to pay for them again- most sites like Flight1,SimMarket etc. keep records and will email you the information you will need to download them again.

Have you thought of taking the drive to a computer repair place? They may be able to recover the data for you

Good luck mate - you definitely have my sympathy...

That is good to hear about getting most of the payware planes back. I bought most of the planes I had directly from the vendor (only bought 3 planes from Simmarket). I didn't think I would be able to get them back because I even save the activation codes on the external drive. Do you think I would I be able to get older planes back like the PMDG 1900,50 North 737's, or the Feelthere CRJ?

I guess I should start thinking about seeing if I can get data off of the drive. I am hoping I can find different power plug and see if it works with this drive. Maybe the power plug is no good anymore.

I already ordered a new external drive, so when that gets here I will start downloading the freeware stuff I had again.  Not really looking forward to doing that again.

I have a 2Tb Seagate 'expansion' drive, one of 3 I own, that has a particularly cantankerous connection that chooses to work when it wants to work.  I persevere because it does work, just not all the time.

Sounds like you may have a similar problem.  Give it a rest. Try next week.  If it happens to power-on get ready to copy its contents to your new drive.

I really hope that is the case! I had LOD 11 mesh that covered the entire alps that you can't get anymore! (the website I got it from is gone)

When you get everything all restored go get yourself 2 backup drives, thats what I do, I have 2 WD Mybooks 2TB each that are clones of each other.

I have a NAS in RAID 5 for this reason.  It took a 4TB drive dying and several RAID 0 config's going down the tubes.  Good luck my friend.

Are you sure that it was the drive that failed, or could it have been the power supply? I had several power supplies fail for old Lacie external drives.

Well I do not know if it failed. I do know that when I plug it in to the power outlet the power light does not come on and the drive does not work, so Im hoping it's just the power supply that dosen't work.

Then I bought one of those little hdd readers that have their own power supply. Plugged it in to the 'failed' hdd, and I could read everything and transferred what I needed off it.

Gotta try that myself thank you. !

Many thanks for that info Jon ... I had no idea!

Perfect for using/reusing my many IDE HDD's on todays SATA computers.

I have one internal 2Tb drive and one external 4Tb drive just in case one of them doesn't work anymore. Contents of 2Tb gets copied into 4Tb when i add something in it. So i feel pretty secured against HDD failure

I always use 2 drives to backup anything important. If you only use one you have to hope the drive will give you warning it is going to fail and when it does start to fail you have to hope all content can be accessed. Drives are cheap nowadays, losing stuff is a nightmare.

I found there's a market for used, mid capacity (50Gb+) IDE hard drives, like people who own multi track Digital Recording equipment.

Turns out many of the popular brands like Alesis use IDE drives as their Storage Media.
