Scenery.cfg is blank?

Recommended Posts

Earlier today I started up my computer and then FSX.  About 1/2 way into the load my system froze and I had to restart my computer.  The system didn't restart so I disconnected the power and tried again after a minute or two.  I had a memory missing code so I reseated the memory.

When I restarted the system it went to the default 4.4GHz.  I reloaded my OC and the system started without a problem.  I will add that I have been running this OC for over a month without as much as a hick-up.

So, I restarted FSX and I got an error stating that my scenery.cfg file was missing and I would need to reinstall FSX!  I went and looked at the cfg file and it was there but nothing was in the file?  I had an old backup (real old) and made a copy as scenery.cfg.

I started FSX again and it told me a few Orbx files were missing and I said  OK.  When it finished I attempted to load a flight plan but FSX stopped running with an error and my options were to look for a solution or close FSX.  I have repeated this process several times.

It has taken me months to get FSX tweaked to where it runs smoothly and consistently, until now!  I really do not want to reload!

Any ideas?

Rick S.

I had an old backup (real old) and made a copy as scenery.cfg.

There's a default scenery.cfg in the same folder as the fsx.cfg which was installed when you first installed FSX. It cannot be modified or deleted though. You can copy it over to the ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX folder though and you'll have your default back again.

Moving this to the CTD Forum. You need to look at the AVSIM CTD Guide and download and run AppCrashView. It provides more info that in the Windows Error Reporting. Copy the latest error and paste it in your response.

Okay, thanks Jim.

I will add the AppCrash data but I want to say that I have not had a lockup before or since with any app except FSX.  The AppCrash data doesn't tell me anything but hopefully it will to one of you.

I had already copied the CFG data from the Scenery.cfg in the FSX root Directory to the the ProgramData.... cfg file and got the results I already mentioned.  I tried it again just now with the same result.  I did restart FSX without any error but it stopped working when I tried to start a flight?

Isn't there a way to reinitialize FSX without reloading from scratch?

Something is amiss in your Addon Scenery folder. Do you have any addon scenery in there? To test, go into your Scenery Library and disable Addon Scenery.

Best regards,

I went into FSX Scenery and disabled Add-on Scenery and all airports that it would let me.  Looks like all add-ons including Orbx etc are gone.

When I load a flight in the C210 it starts loading and then dumps me closing FSX.

Strange, it will load using the C172 but the view is in the foot-well and I can't get out of it?

I'm lost!

All Orbx addons must be turned on or off by using FTX Central utility. The directions for this comes with each FSX/Orbx utility. You cannot use the Scenery Library to enable or disable this scenery.

You cannot disable default scenery. Anything below propeller objects must remain enabled. Addon Scenery and any scenery you have added to FSX can be disabled or enabled.

Strange, it will load using the C172 but the view is in the foot-well and I can't get out of it?

This sounds like the resolution for your video card is out of whack in the General FSX Settings. When you get to the FSX Setup page, click on Customize and then settings and then click on the General tab and make sure your settings are proper.

When I load a flight in the C210 it starts loading and then dumps me closing FSX.

The C210 must be an addon aircraft (the Carenardo?). If that is not loading properly, then you will have to reinstall or get support from Carenardo or the developer of the aircraft, whichever appropriate.

Did you copy the scenery.cfg located in the same folder as the fsx.cfg and move it to the folder where the scenery.cfg (the working version) is located? (C:\Program Data\Microsoft\FSX). Both folders are hidden.

Recommend you uninstall FSX and reinstall FSX using the following guide - http://support.precisionmanuals.com/kb/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx .

I am afraid you are right about the re-install Jim.  there are just too many things that have gone haywire.  I wonder what really caused it to begin with?  I had it running flawlessly with everything maxed 1/2 Vsync locked @ 30 FPS thru Ni.  Frames would stay around 30 until high cloud cover and drop to 15ish but still mostly smooth.

I am not blaming this on anything in particular but for sake of argument the only things that changed that day was linking Plan-G v3.1 from a client computer which worked fine and I installed Fiber Frame Accelerator v1.3 , which I have had since it's release, activated it but didn't think to shut it down before loading FSX.  Got the warning that FSX needed to be running, shut it down, loaded FSX and WHAMO; here I am.  I don't really think Accelerator it had anything to do with it though.

I started this load months ago and just got it right; Accelerator was the last thing on my list!  I wonder how long it will take this time; maybe I should consider P3D?

D***!

Thanks

Rick S.

Sounds like you have too many gadgets. LOL. I did not see any problems in your crash report showing anything wrong with the installation of FSX/Acceleration. Everything loaded properly. There may be a problem with a module in the dll.xml but it appears your Orbx, FeelThere, A2A, FSUIPC modules loaded okay. I suspect FS Accelerator which modifies your FSX.cfg with tweaks and changes settings on the fly caused the problem(s). You may not have an addon scenery installed properly too. You might want to download and run the SceneryConfigEditor (Google) as it will look for errors in your scenery.cfg and tell you about them.

Okay, you made me think.  Just looked at my BU FSX.CFG from a day or two ago and it is a lot different from the one out there now!

From what I see in FSX/Scenery it appears as though all of my ORBX, FSGlobal etc stuff is gone.  I do have SCE, although I haven't ever used it to make any changes because of suggested Orbx issues.

I am in the middle of completely copying my C:(OS) and D:(All Things FSX) drives to a 3TB USB 3.0 drive right now so I will try your suggestions and use my older CFG when it gets done.

Thanks

Rick S.

so I will try your suggestions and use my older CFG when it gets done.

You don't have to use an old config. If you move the FSX.cfg from the folder to a temporary folder (or delete it), the next time you restart FSX the config will rebuild. You can't do that with the dll.xml or the scenery.cfg though. Regarding Orbx scenery, you will have to run their FTX Central a couple of times and see if that fixes the problem with their scenery not loading in your scenery.cfg. I remember doing something like that when mine got corrupted. Put it at the default, start up FSX, shutdown FSX, then run the utility and load North America or whatever scenery you have, restart FSX, and that should fix it.
