Good budget-oriented headsets?

Hi all,

 

Finally in the market for a personal headset to be used for completing the rest of my PPL time. But, to be honest, I really don't know where to start. I know I don't need anything super fancy, and it needs to be pretty cheap. It needs to be comfortable of course, but the real priority is cost. Any recommendations?

I previously had the turtle beach X12.  Solid headset for the price. The Razer Kraken 7.1's replaced them. Although, I do still have them...

make sure which category you prefer, over the ear or in-the-ear. I own in-the-ear Halo Quiet Technology and they are amazing.

Unfortunately with (real) aviation headsets it is often like with fine wine - opinions and tastes are highly subjective.

You can frequently find good headsets on EBay, you can pick up a high end product at big discount but it is always

better to first try them before committing to purchase, some good brand names often have return policy in the first XX days.

Haha I have a light speed and its amazing but you can't go wrong with a David Clark either. I also have an AVCOM its cheap but the sound quality is good but if your gonna be flying for long periods you may want to get some gel packs for it.

I also have a Bose A20, but that is not good for a budget. Noise cancelling is great, but comes at a high price. My DC is my backup and goes to my passengers so consider the first headset an investment for the future.

I've had a Razer 7.1 Tiamet, and two Tritton 5.1 AX's.  None of those are as good as the Sennheiser PC 350. The 350 is light and comfortable for hours.  Unlike the clunky volume boxes of the others, the PC350 has a volume knob on one earpiece.  It's a stereo headset, but the sound's better than the other two.

What an interesting gaggle of replies...For those who own David Clarks, what model? I'm still trying to find a pretty good balance between cost and quality.

Go to Pilots of America forum and then to 'the classifieds' sub-forum, there are a couple of pilots selling their David Clark's (different models) in very good condition and prices are very good. That may be something right down your alley. BTW, these are very good forums, excellent resource for real pilots. You want opinions about headsets - your get them there in spades.
