Flight fails to start - occasionally

Recommended Posts

It's not a global problem with the non-GFWL FTK.

That's why there is a solution to revert back to the non-GFWL version... I know that there is no problem with the non-GFWL version.

Flight is installed to a non-UAC location.

I tried moving my Flight installation to a separate HHD but the same problem occurs...

I had the problem first, I think about a week ago. And as I wrote in my original post, flight suddently started working again after that. In fact it was suddently loading much quicker, just as it used to without the toolkit. Then yesterday the error appeared again. So it seems to be an intermittent problem, at least for me. If, as KavindaJD suggests, the error message may be triggered by a failed checksum as files were added/modified in the flight folder, I'm surprised to see this alternating behaviour - so maybe a link to MS updates?

I restored my system back to pre-update condition of 11/22, and still Flight will not start.

I used the xlive.dll rename trick and Flight started, but put me back at square one. I'm afraid I might have lost my progress to date, EP's, aerocaches, landings, etc....

I should have been thinking and backed up my career files before trying it, but didn't. My bad. But, it might not be bad to start over anyway. That will extend the life of Flight for me by at least two more years to get back to where I was. :)

Thank you.

Hi Folks

That's why there is a solution to revert back to the non-GFWL version...

I know that there is no problem with the non-GFWL version.

LOL.
Do you ever read the posts you reply to ?

Example non-GFWL failures -

I also attempted a system restore to a few days ago
when the non-GFWL Flighttoolkit modified Flight was working fine
but before a Windows update
but again no success.

i.e. non-GFWL fails

Same here, the non-GFWL version on my laptop will not start after the splash screen comes up.

i.e. non-GFWL fails

It's the non-GFWL versions that fail.

i.e. non-GFWL fails

I've tried again this morning, and still get the error.
I too am using the 1.0.25.5 version.

i.e. non-GFWL fails

Going by the version numbers cited,
the issue is being reported for both GFWL and non-GFWL versions.

For anyone who's been experiencing this error
taSMF7M.png

The error is GFWL failed to initialize.

The remainder is only one possible reason why GFWL failed to initialize.
Not the definitive reason.

Maybe someone could try the following -

Close the dialog.
Close Flight.
Stop your GFWL service, (Task Manager - Services - wlidsvc - Right-click - Stop).
Do not restart wlidsvc. (If Flight needs it, launching Flight should restart it for you.)

Reinstate any disabled / deleted dlls.

Start Flight.
Does the error occur now ?

I'd have thought

users of the non-GFWL FTK shouldn't be getting this error at all.

Does the default shortcut to launch Flight,
contain a call to launch GFWL ?

My shortcut is one I'd made, directly to the flight.exe.

Nope.. :P

Sorry about that, I mean the Multiplayer enabled version. i.e. the GFWL enabled version! The solution that I posted enables you to revert so that GFWL is once again a dependency.

Steve, said that the GFWL version works fine and he has all of his data. Deleting the xlive.dll does not truly revert the FTK, it just enables GFWL for the GFWL -Less version!

So I'll have to diagree with:

the issue is being reported for both GFWL and non-GFWL versions.

I also tried by starting GFWL on it's own and then running Flight and it doesn't work either way... so the other possibility is that the Flight installation is corrupt which is reported when there is an error in the root install directory. Flight launches GFWL in it's internal code.

When xlive.dll is removed from the install directory, why does Flight then start?

This is a "global" problem. In computing terms it is affecting more than one local computer.

A shortcut does not call upon two executables. You call upon Flight.exe which then directs GFWL to open.

In a way this still happens. You cannot completely get rid of the connection between GFWL and Flight. Flight has been compiled with a dependency wih GFWL.exe.

The FTK just tells Flight to ignore this.

OK, I did that and got the same error.

Hi Folks

Tom -

Which FTK version are you using, GFWL or Non-GFWL ?

What version are your GFWLive & Client exes ?

Version # is displayed at the bottom of the GFWMarketplace - Settings page.

My current working GFWLive.exe version is 3.5.0067.0.

If your version is older than 3.5.0067.0,

Kavinda had previously posted instructions

for fully uninstalling, then downloading & installing the latest GFWL version components.

See his post at - Just Flying Fun

Don't rename or delete xlive.dll is the replacement for GFWL.  If you are having problems with the non-GFWL version, then try uninstalling it and install the GFWL version instead.  Renaming that file could cause the uninstall to fail next time you install a new version of the toolkit.

That error occurs whenever LIVE fails to start.  For the non-GFWL toolkit, this means my replacement is failing to start.  It should be writing a xlive.log file into %localappdata%\Flight Tools\Flight Toolkit\xlive.log.  Please post the contents here if the last time you ran Flight you got the initialization error.  It gets overwritten every time, so if you tried running Flight again after an error, or after renaming xlive.dll, then it won't haven anything useful.

My guess is that it can't connect to one of the servers, but not sure.

Edit: Just a couple seconds of testing and I am getting it now too.  It can't connect to the database.  I'll try to get it fixed soon, and change the code for the next version so that it can handle missing connections to the DB.

Next time, instead of renaming files, please check the logs...

@stonelance: As you write, it fails to connect to the database. I hope this helps in determining the cause of the error.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I'm really confused as to why this is no longer working any more.  I didn't change anything on my end.  Is anyone familiar with MySQL databases?

That was my guess but I called the hosting service to see if anything has changed and they said everything is working on their end, but I don't think they looked into it much.  The support was pretty terrible to be honest.  I may need to switch hosting providers if I can't figure it out.  For now I'm going to release a new version which will not fail to initialize, but you won't get aerocaches.

I just checked my xlive.log and it is essentially the same as the one above.

Last lines:

  Initializing SQL
  Connecting to SQL DB
Error: Failed to connect to SQL DB: Unknown MySQL server host 'flive.db.10499026.hostedresource.com' (0)
Error: Failed to initialize Live...
