Upgrading High End 460GTX

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I currently own a golden sample Gainward 460GTX which at the time I purchased it, was one of the best GPU's out there. I am now looking to upgrade and the GPU market has really confused me, particularly why some GPU's are so cheap and some so ridiculously expensive. I have around £120/$180 to spend plus (if I can sell it) whatever I sell the current 460GTX for.

Does anyone have any ideas what may give me a sizeable boost in FSX? I am currently looking at a 760GTX but I am confused why some models are so cheap. Some of these newer GPU's have lower memory bit rates for example than mine so I don't want to get something that will make FSX worse!

I use the GPU solely for FSX so that is the only thing I am thinking of. My FPS is currently okay but I think the GPU is now holding my system back as most of my bad FPS scenarios are say in dense clouds, complex VC's etc.

Thanks!

Are you going to stick with Nvidia?

I think you are in 750ti territory for £120 which will be an improvement but won't blow you away.

What CPU do you have as it's best to try and make a good match.

Personally I think a 770 is the lowest you should be looking at but once you get there, you may as well cough up for a 970.

You won't get much for your 460 either to be honest.

Can you link some 760s with differing prices? Other than memory size I can't think of why there would be huge differences in prices.

Yes I'd only really consider Nvidia, never had an ATI card before. My CPU is a I5-3570K @ 4.5GHz. I am quite happy with the 460GTX but any cheap improvement would be great at this point because the PMDG T7 works good but I would like to get things that ever bit smoother. I was looking at this and pushing the budget if it was worth the expense http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-gigabyte-gtx-760-windforce-2x-28nm-pcie-30-6008mhz-gddr5-gpu-1033mhz-boost-1085mhz-cores-1152-dv

I know FSX isn't greatly GPU dependent but with new intensive aircraft I think it is quickly becoming more so, VC's are pretty much the only places I get really bad FPS drops.

IMO there´s no "cheap improvement" because your GTX460 is old, yes, but a very good card, you could try to overclock it.

Look at this comp.:

The 760 is definitely better power/performance than the 750ti which is only a good option for people with weak power supplies.
