You'll activate your FSX as you always have, through the MS servers.

How so? If you own FSX already not a single thing will change.

If you don't own FSX already you will purchase through Steam, the same software, the same planes, the same scenery, the same, the same, the same.

Add-ons will all be the same. They will all install the same, the same, the same. There is no DLC, so the same

Yep, get multiplayer working for their servers.

No better man then JSkorna to swing a large sledgehammer through the Bulls@@@ and speculation :)

Well said Jim

Yaaay! Finally I don't have to rely on those 3 PITA discs to install the game again plus they have started to go all wonky on me although there aren't any scratches on them. If there aren't any obvious add-on incompatibilities, I'm getting a steam copy just for convenience.

Fixing it for Windows 8.1 I see that as not enchaning fsx it's fixing items do not any way enchance fsx. Not cut and dry as people think, 99% will remain the same but fixing certain background issuses with joysticks and software does not constitute enchancing software.

No other changes.. &..

So, in a nutshell?

1. Same old 8 year old FSX being redistributed by Dovetail.

2. NO, it will NOT be 64bit. I'm sure no-one in their right mind will develope a 8 year old program into 64bit, for the gamers that use Steam!

3. Do we know how they will be redistribiting it? --- No, not yet!

4. Addons? Well, freeware & some payware that will let you pick the path shpuld be OK.

Just wondering with installers that look for registry entries before installing...

We just do not know (yet) how the FSX install will work & what root directory will be created!

Will this affect us that already have FSX or have moved on to other sims? Of course not!

& as far as Dovetail's 'new' sim?

Remember, they are licensed for Microsoft's flight technology! Not Flight!

But, it could be anything,.. Flight, FS9 or Combat Sim engines..

Pure speculation, but nothing taken forgranted as yet!

There are many using Win 8.1 without issues. Maybe talk to MS about fixing 8.1.

They are, Win 10!

It's gonna be fun for some of us where our broadband downloads are not as fast as some.

Here in South Africa, using Speedtest.net, I'm getting less than 4mips, so a 10GB download will take forever & if it drops out?

DTG was allowed two things:

1. To convert things to work on Steam

2. To work with their multiplayer system.

FSX has always worked with Win 8.1 so nothing new there.

They said that they were allowed to make some bug fixes as well.

There is no thread in the FSX Forum ?

Sorry, just commenting on the original post.

The 2 Bug fixes:

MS FSX didn't work with Steam. Now it will------bug fixed.

MS FSX didn't work with any public multiplayer server. Now it will ----bug fixed.

Being that it will be sold through Steam, a good guess would be that it will be installed into the user's Steam library folder (or folder of their choosing if they have multiple libraries setup), with the appropriate registry entries made.

Steam buffers and spools the downloads. So, even if you lost your connection, it'll remain where it was previously.

I am planning on moving to FSX from FS9 since I got a new system that can handle it.  I have been looking to purchase FSX but I missed the opportunity when the prices were really low so I am happy that it will now be available from Dovetail at a reasonable price.  Will I be able to download this and fly without being connected to Steam?  I prefer just to fly with Radar Contact offline.

Well it's good that another flight simulator gets some exposure on Steam. It has always surprised me that there are so many train simulators, farming simulators, garbage truck simulators, goat simulators etc. but so few flight simulators.

However I'm concerned FSX might scare away potential new simmers rather than attract more people to the hobby. The base FSX sim requires some tweaks to the .cfg file to even work properly on modern hardware. It doesn't even support widescreen monitors without editing the .cfg. Without addons, it looks like something from 2006 (understandably).
