FSX: Steam Edition for Take-Off on December 18

Featured Replies

Steam buffers and spools the downloads. So, even if you lost your connection, it'll remain where it was previously.

And once it has been downloaded you can back it up to an external hard drive. Moving games to a new computer basically involves copying over the Steam directory. No need to re-download everything again.

Why Microsoft would not give Dovetail all the rights to change FSX is beyond me.

Assuming you won't be able to use your CD key and activate on Steam, there's absolutely no reason to buy this at all... and I don't undertand why Dovetail would waste money on buying only the distributing license.

Now, imagine FSX being opened up for Dovetail so they could work on it like Lockheed, but then with Steam updates and Steamworks Mod support like Skyrim...

It's about time someone steps up and fixes a 2015 FS platform that is not riddled with pathetic licensing issues.

This topic is now a discussion concerning FSX only so you know where it has to go.

Thank you.

I'm merging the discussion in the Flight forum with this one. You'll probably see some duplicate comments, but it will be ok.

Thank you.

Will I be able to download this and fly without being connected to Steam?

Every Steam game requires the Steam.exe to connect to Steam and then the game itself starts. I doubt this will change running Steam's version of FSX. For better or worse you're permanently chained to Gabe Newell's business model.

For anyone concerned about their FSX installation disks deteriorating, just make disk images. You can perfectly well install FSX from the images. Back up the images and you're good to go for a long, long time.

You can stay in offline mode as long as you want without going online. You can also launch a game via its exe if you don't wish to log in. Only a very few Steam titles, primarily those that utilize a integrated SteamWorks profile/API actually require logging in.

Wow, you are very, VERY wrong.

Many games on Steam can be launched directly from their .exe.

Then I got some bad news for you! DT TS2015 requires Login even if you run from the executable (railworks.exe), so chances are FSX Steam will be setup the same.

Thanks

So tell us a little about what it means to be logged in.  Does that automatically put you in a multiplayer environment?  Do you even have to join in?  Can you just do your own thing and ignore it?  Does it zap resources?  Thanks.

Caveat - You have to log in to go offline. But once you're offline, you don't have to login/go online again if you should choose to do so.

Logged in you'll automatically get program updates, you'll get ads for new content (Not in game of course) and access to the steam store to purchase them. You'll also have access to chat with the community.

Thanks

Yeah, pretty sure I stated: Only a very few Steam titles, primarily those that utilize a integrated SteamWorks profile/API actually require logging in.

At present, its unknown if it will be a SW title.

Just tried  that procedure in TS2015, and it does appear to work in TS2015, so I take back my earlier post! Thanks!!

Thanks
