Interestingly, I found this on http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/12/11/flight-simulator-x-steam/#comments

. A2A Simulation‘s Scott Gentile put it to The Flare Path like this:

Professional developers of flight sim addons have to hire teams of highly talented artists, sometimes numbering in the dozens to collaborate, and these people all need to be paid. The sales price of each download has to be kept to a minimum so customers can afford to purchase them. This creates the narrow margin of profit. If these profits are reduced because of additional fees by Dovetail, a great many of these developers may find it untenable to remain in business or alternatively may be forced to reduce their output.

And...

Dovetail:

There are so many add-ons currently available for FSX that we cannot promise that all of them will work with no issues. FSX: Steam Edition is installed in a different way to the boxed version and occupies a different location so it is possible that some add-ons may not work, but rest assured that we have made every effort to ensure that as many of them as possible work. Where add-ons do not immediately function with FSX: Steam Edition we will try to work with the community, developer or publisher of the add-on to find the solutions as needed. Again, we cannot promise that 100% of all add-ons released over the history of FSX will work with FSX: Steam, but we are committed to trying.

I'm just hoping their new multiplayer system will still let original versions connect directly

Not unless there is a patch issued for the MS version of FSX.

A lot of these conversations/posts remind me of speaking with my Grandfather on why unleaded gasoline is better than leaded for the environment and the people in it.

haha true....and P3D and FSX people are kind of getting like Ford Truck and GMC Truck people......My Truck is better then Your Truck arguments is probably one of the most exhausting rivalry on the planet. At the end of the day they are both trucks, just like FSX and P3D are both simulators based on the same engine.Whatever works best for you is the best choice for you...

And that is why I will be flying my MS FSX until hell freezes over, 7 years trouble free and no reason to break it.

Bring on steam version as rather just redownload it than reinstall with discs it on future-desktops. if 85% of add ins work in steam where good to go if European Truck 2 mods work sure fsx ones will and dovetail CEO knows fsx has reputation for paid add ons. FSX should of been on steam after Microsoft stop development of future sims. Average desktop from 2010 and later now can run stock FSX at descent settings not possible in 2006. FSX brings in fresh users and younger crowd good it needs it long term.

I wonder if the "fresh users" or "younger crowd" that has never heard of FSX until now, and then decides to try it out just because it pops up on the marketing page of Steam isn't in for a big surprise.  If I were completely new to flight simulation, or perhaps were just coming from the world of current flight simulation combat games, I think that my first impression of FSX would be underwhelming.  And whatever the Steam version DLC scheme turns out to be, we certainly aren't looking at paying $3 to get a new airplane, like in ROF. I've said it many times before, but to reiterate my opinion, I feel that the 2006 vintage FSX isn't worth a darn until one spends hundreds or thousands of dollars to really bring it alive.  It's just my theory (and I'm ok to be wrong) that the kind of person who only now gets FSX just because it happened to pop up on Steam probably isn't interested enough to become a big buyer of $60 add ons, and will probably shrug their shoulders at FSX and quickly move on to something more exciting.  For this reason, I'm skeptical that a Steam version of FSX will have much of an impact at all on the popularity of FSX, the willingness of developers to continue developing for it, or the future of flight simulation as a popular hobby.

Yes this would also be my concern, stock FSX isn't impressive.  X-Plane looks better out of the box and has a number of detractors on Steam for the download size and the lack of good quality default aircraft.  The first issue doesn't occur with FSX, but the second is valid, unless Dovetail are planning on including a link to the PMDG website and a note that after spending (i guess) £30, you'll need to spend another £60 for a single plane...oh and around £250 for scenery, oh and £20+ for airports, oh and you'll need a good yoke / joystick, oh TrackIR or EZDok, oh and a weather program, did you get textures with that program...no, that's another £30.  Wow, it's quite embarrassing when you work out what you have spent.

If Dovetail can't develop FSX What good does it do. My guess nothing. gamer's what's something that look very good. standard fsx look not nearly what new stuff looks.

We hardcore simmers have it. Multiplay. you mean get chased by 14, year old see I can crash into your 737 when landing.....

ML here i come when PMDG is ready for P3D

People just don't get it. ITS A MARKETING TOOL. That's it plain and simple.  Sales outlet period! The "Amazon" of game sales.

As devs, we have tried multiple times to contact Dovetail... All to no avail. Not even an automail.  Tried from three different mail accounts.

No joy.

I have to wonder what kind of bullsh$t is going on over there but it's become fairly obvious that it's not a good thing.

Please contact oisin at milviz dot com for forum registration information.  Please provide proof of purchase if you want support.  Also, include the username you wish to have.

It wouldn't surprise me if they are planning to launch with a couple of DLCs in it's wake. Their earning model with train simulator has been heavily dependent on a steady stream of DLC.

That does not sound promising.  One would of thought when FSX comes to steam you would be able to pump it up with all the goodies

What did you offer to Dovetail?
