Holy Cow this thread is not being monitored by Avsim staff yet?

This has been a very civil conversation!

They are monitoring it, but they've all fallen asleep from sheer boredom.

I can wake them up at any time, just say the word!!

Why is there any reason to think current FSX addons won't work with FSX Steam?

FSX is FSX regardless of how it gets installed.

As I see it, the only concern for third party developers might be modifying their installer in terms of what registry entry to look for to verify install location.

And even then I suspect the registry entries for Steam FSX will be identical to the entries for disc installed FSX except for the path.

Most installers worth their value can already find FSX when it is installed to a non-standard location. Those that can't provide the ability for the end user to find FSX manually.

I can see why devs would want to be able to sell through Steam, though I would be interested in what kind of a cut Steam wants as compared to the other popular outlets.

As for me, I will stick with my discs as the idea of waiting for FSX to be installed over the Internet as compared to off of a few DVDs makes me want to stick a pencil in my ear.

Joe

Get BimmerCop and his Popcorn in here.

Oh trust me, I'm having a blast so far watching the drama slowly unfold. Great cast and an ever evolving storyline.

FSX Steam Edition will have a different download, installer, backup and restore features then the DVD and DTG said it will have a modified directory structure to work with Steam....They have said the majority of third party addon's will work but not all

I have Age Of Empires, Age of Mythology and Rise of Nations on Steam and those titles have changes from the DVD because of Steam Delivery Backup and Restore but they also have great improvements so it was worth it. My old DVD of those titles are not as good on my latest PC

Also with Steam my Girlfriend and I play FPS games and we both buy a copy off Steam. SHe downloads it and installs it and backs it up. I try to restore the copy she backed up and Steam won't allow that. You have to delete a registry file in order to do install this way so it can rebuild the install on your account. so each downloaded game is personalized to your account.

We do this trick to get around downloading it twice to try and save on monthly broadband usage. So a copy of FSX Sream will be personalized to your account rather then the install key on the DVD

That won't change how FSX works or how addons work with FSX.

The FSX folder structure won't change, other than where it gets installed.

Changing the internal file structure would require a complete rework of FSX and that ain't happenin'

DTG said it will have a modified directory structure to work with Steam....They have said the majority of third party addon's will work but not all.

I would bet that the problems will be with the addon installers, not the addons themselves, due to Steam not putting FSX in the default Program Files location.

Time will tell and we will know soon.

Joe

We wait with baited breath..

Best post in this thread And stop eating your bait.

Yes I actually agree, this thread is about FSX coming to Steam,  not about delving into the foolish and somewhat silly minds of some people on here.   In fairness to me and Jim of course we have tried tirelessly at all times to maneuver this thread back onto the correct path and keep it from going somewhat mental.  As Jim and myself would agree its been a tough struggle

Nobody on here knows what actual changes will be made. I can only compare changes that have been made to DVD's that were moved over to Steam that I have bought, and also what someone from Steam has said that their are changes that will leave some third party incompatible..............but unless you are with DTG you don't know at this time.

Quote me all you want but you don't work for DTG so better just to wait and see what they have done with it.

I think I have 5 or 6 Steam purchases now that I got for under $10 so I could toss my old DVD's and I intend to do that with FSX if it will work with all my third party stuff.....so I will wait and see as well.

I move around a lot so I don't want any more CD's DVD's and prefer everything on Digital from here on end. Doesn't matter if it is music movies or games.

Will see December 18th what happens. Flight sim great hobby as keeps my mind busy and learned basic navigation, geography, wind stocks like golf pins use them to tell wind direction. Geometry learned in school pays off. Back in early 90s middle school before copy protection my brother traded floppies in school and ended up with free flight sim version 4.0 got hooked as could see get up to 60,000 ft with a cessna lolol. Need warehouse full of 5 1/2 floppies to install fsx now. Never run out places to fly thanks high oil prices getting back into flight sims in 2010.

Steam is fantastic, all your purchases in one place and all configured for you.

Yeah, who wants to use secure payment methods (PayPal) and be able to easily reinstall games after a Windows reinstall (particularly easy if you have a secondary drive, no re-downloading needed!)? :P

Poppet, you seem familiar for some reason. Did you used to post here under another user name? For some reason you remind me of another lady that used to post very frequently at Avsim then disappeared.

Btw, why does your signature box say you love being married and have mentioned your husband before but your profile says your not interested in men?
