Close call indeed

Recommended Posts

Some of you may have seen this but for those that haven't; this is one video I can watch again and again.

Any RW Pilots care to comment on whether this went according to plan or not? It doesn't seem safe but who knows

Yes, it doesn't follow standard western practices of 'balanced field takeoff' (to protect against possible engine failure). But this is not the first such video with Russian airplanes using up every foot of the runway length, there were similar 'close call' videos with passenger Ilyushin aircraft too.

Wow I haven't seen those ones you speak of, although really it's just as dangerous to the crew and people on the ground with a cargo plane. That's exactly what I was thinking, if you lost an engine you would have no options. As one commenter on the video said "We pay for runway, we use all of runway" lol.

Here's a nice view of the end of the rwy from the cockpit of a 707!

Nice! sorry only just saw this, but yeah, I wouldn't want to be in that plane haha, sounded and looked like the engines were struggling. Just Planes have some great clips.

Actually the engines sounded ok. Engines of that era had a higher HP compressor noise than today.

Of course, I'm familiar with the sound I just didn't think about it and it's been so long since I watched old jets, never knew why they made that whine though, cheers! Seeing how slow it gets rolling afters he's spooled thrust and released the brake was more what gave me the "this plane is too heavy and it's too hot" feeling. Although on watching again it looks like he could've even had about 200ft left when he lifts off, hard to tell because they cut it though.

Yes, I think he held it on the ground a few seconds longer to get a couple of extra knots. He must have at max or perhaps a little over even!

At least the tyres would've probably been at good pressure  :P The one positive effect of warm weather! (unless you're a glider pilot or a bird)
