I just upgraded my GTX 670 to a GTX 980 with no increase in performance with regard to FSX. I didn't upgrade it for FSX though and I knew it wouldn't help at all. If you want more performance upgrade or overclock your processor - preferably to the i7-4790K.

I recently moved from Core2 Q9650 quad to the i7-4790, in my case it was a new socket that needed a new mobo and so on, and the difference was stunning.  I was expecting a noticeable increase moving from the 3.0 GHz quad to the 4.0 GHz quad but it was much more than noticeable.  I was concerned that just a speed change wasn't worth the investment and I was willing to buy the six-core but Ryan (PMDG) suggested the six-core was optimized for hyper-threading, which FSX doesn't take advantage of and recommended the i7-4790. Not only did that save me a lot of money but performance is amazing.

About 5-8% is all you should expect from Sandy Bridge to Haswell when controlled for the same clock speeds. That's a lot of expense for a couple FPS.

 

w/r/t your original question, you'd probably gain some performance with the 980 in GPU-limited situations such as heavy clouds with transparency AA.

Now there's an understatement! I'm currently running a 2600K myself at 4.7, and the idea of strapping on a solid week of work rebuilding my system for that kind of meager gain makes my head hurt just thinking about it. I did just put in a water-cooled 980, and moved my 680 over to my 4.5GHz i7-975 client machine as part of a prototyping drill for designing a multi-PC system with a projector cluster for the external views in P3D.

If there was a 20% increase in performance I would take on the task, but even then my optimizations, fsx.cfg tweaks, windows optimizations would take me at least a week

I'm thinking that we'll have to wait for Skylake in 12-18 months to have any chance at those kinds of gains...hopefully the smaller 14nm process will overclock better and Intel won't negate those gains by using suboptimal TIM in the package like they did with Ivy/Haswell.

Just upgraded from the stock i7-2600 which was running at 3.4ghz to the 4790K which runs standard 4.0ghz and can be overclocked without additional cooling to 4.7ghz (although I haven't found the need to OC). Pre 4790K my framerates were 15-20 on a limit of 30fps, I'm now getting 35-40 with 40fps limit. I also have all of the sliders maxed. I have no lags or stuttering as was the norm before. I'm using the 4790K with an Asus Z97 Gryphon mobo and FSX installed on a dedicated Samsung Evo 256g SSD, R9 270X graphics card is used.

 

Well worth considering.

Thanks for the input guys. I just plugged in my 980 and the frames are at a steady 30 with well observed increase in smoothness. After a lot of prep and taking notes of my current apps, programs, tweaks, and optimizations, I may upgrade my CPU

An epilogue--something (I think related to the driver change associated with the 980) caused my 2600K system to throw a couple blue screens after the video card swap, one of which scrambled part of the boot drive.  And, as luck would have it, the imaging software couldn't restore the last backup to a bootable state.  So...ugh...ready or not, time to rebuild Rome.

 

I figured if I have to start things over, may as well update the platform.  Replaced the ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe and i7-2600K with an ASUS Z97 Sabertooth Mark 1 and an i7-4790K.  Kept everything else--16GB of 2133MHz CAS 9 Mushkin redline RAM, the SSDs, 950W PSU etc. Running it water cooled with the same Apogee CPU block from the Sandy Bridge system.  The overclock drill--clocking it up to 4.7 GHZ (with HT on even) was the easiest I've ever had it...set 1.22v in the BIOS based on reports in the overclocking forums, set the CPU mult to 47, and after about 45 min on OCCT it threw an error.  Bumped up the Vid to 1.24v, and it's off and running on the burn-in tests for hours.  Never saw a single blue screen in the overclock.

 

Can't give an apples-to-apples comparison on frame rates, as I built things up using DX10--first time I've tried that since long before Steve's DX10 fixer appeared.  On a 2560x1600 SHD monitor I'm getting 30 fps locked at big sceneries with UT2 traffic...haven't piled on the weather yet.  The animated service vehicles on the FSDT airports are very smooth where they weren't before.  And IQ with the DX10 fixer is pretty good.  And 1.6GB of available VAS at FSDT KDFW in the PMDG 777.

 

So, as I suspected, the upgrade from the 2600K has not produced a massive increase in frame rates, but the frames are more stable and there's a noticeable increase in smoothness.  Can't say for certain what is attributable to the new platform vs DX10.  The P3D build-up may be more telling.  All said, I don't regret making the change.
