Could anyone who knows the XP demands on PC advise if I am GPU limited and if a new GPU like the GTX 970 would help?

Seems the GPU is almost maxed out.... (97%)  And this is at an embarrassing "Normal" textures...  after using High textures with v3 HD scenery my fps dropped mainly below 20...  dropping the res to normal helped a bit - now avg of 30 but textures look muddy and blurry.

Ryan, I'm getting almost exactly the same performance I had with Mesh v2, between 20-30fps, but I did compile the HD mesh v3 into my photoscenery. I wonder if the performance decrease you are seeing is due to the more varied use of textures. AFAIK, Andras mentioned that photoscenery will perform better than scenery without because X-Plane doesn't have to blend all the texture types together.

I found the biggest difference in performance for me was actually a faster CPU and hard drive. I have two computers, one has a more powerful graphics card (with double the memory), but the one with the weaker graphics card as an I7 as opposed to an I5 and an SSD, and it wins hands down in performance. Maybe somebody else with the GTX 970 can advise.

@ryanbatcund

  What I have noticed is that it uses Both loads CPU / GPU . Depending on the objects too.

  Roads / Objects / traffic / trees / Water / LOD too me looks like it's CPU.

 HDR / Clouds / shadows should be GPU.

 I doubt that the i5 which you have is limiting.  You need a GPU with a minimum  2 GB VRAM and make the RAM to 16 GB.

 BTW you can check it yourself , goto Settings / Data and select the fps thing on the left.  That would show you CPU and GPU stuff.

@Ironmaiden

I'll definitely agree on a better CPU for things like objects, facades, forests, it really does make a difference, but, I remember chatting with Blacky75 who bought a monster gaming PC, but found X-Plane was only utlizing about 20% of the GPU and CPU, and we speculated that it was probably the bus speed which was a limiting factor. If your GPU is running out of memory you'll get lots of thrashing, but I find I don't go over 1GB using photoscenery, HD Mesh and World2XPlane (Well in big cities I do, but I avoid these).

When the clouds come in the fps really plummet.  Like I had only 8 with heavy clouds, the Carenado C90, and rural scenery.  I've never seen it that low.

Anyway I've almost downloaded the USA....  is there a way I could help with the torrent uploading?  I did not get torrents they were all the zip full files.

I have an i7 4790K running at 4.4GHz on "water" (stable at 5.0GHz during some tests but brought to stock clock for installation and testing of X-Plane), and a GTX 970 4GB superclocked card.  During normal flight, my CPU/GPU show around 15-17% load, equally, with v2 mesh.  There are a lot of factors involved, but sheer CPU speed is the main target.  As I load the system with the rendering settings, I see a framerat decrease but the CPU/GPU load doesn't vary much if at all.  VRAM is also important because you don't want to exceed the VRAM limit or you must compress textures and load the GPU which then becomes the bottleneck.  I am running v2 mesh, not yet v3 as it will take me a month to get it downloaded.

Are you running default clouds or SkyMaxx?  Try reducing the cloud percentages and/or puff size.  I don't see that makes a lot of visual difference on the display, but it sure helps framerates.

That's a nice system you have :smile:. What sort of fps do you average?

Thanks, just built it a couple of weeks ago.  I don't know how to answer framerates because of so many variables.  But on the ground at KSEA with a Carenado 172, mesh v2, SkyMaxx and most settings pushed at or near max, it varies between 55-75 fps on the ground during taxi.  A lot depends on the weather and resultant clouds.  Airborn it runs almost always over 100 in XP, and on a bare bones (new) installation of FSX/Acceleration, at altitude over no scenery (ocean) at FL370 in the default 737 with clear weather and puffy little clouds, it has gone over 450.

It is a great upgrade from my older Q9450 Quad core at 3.2GHz which is no slouch, but it is 7 years old.

Hey clouds will chew your  fps.

Increasing LOD will hit your CPU and the GPU also.

Resize your X-Plane window making it smaller and bigger. If you are GPU limited then the framerate will change, CPU limited, it will not as far as I know.

My fps are lower (I'm getting around 20 in rural areas, drops to teens with weather). Is a new video card going to help ( current gtx 570)or is it my processor? (2500 k@4 ghz), or 8 GB ram?

A new video card always help ... and what you mean with 8 GB of RAM or VRAM? If you have less then 8 GB of RAM (not video RAM = VRAM) then you can call yourself lucky that it works at all. I normally - explicitly - do recommend at least 8 GM of RAM on my website (16 GB is even safer as it gives you more headroom when additional add-ons are loaded).

XP10_HD_Mesh_V3_+40+000-Europe seems to be missing on the Aerosoft mirror. Currently downloading it from the AU server.

Hmm ... I might check that later, but I thought (checking yesterday) that they had all 98 files on their server, But at the moment they seem to have a server maintenance anyways 8then, nothing works of course - maybe this is the reason ?)

Torrents are outside of my control ... they are fully provided by flightsim.com (and of course you, the community) ... so, that might work at some tiimes and not at others. Also remember, that we are still in the first days of release, where traffic might overwhelm some sites for some time!
