running flight sims on an external hard drive

Hi

Does anybody run any of the recognised flightsims from an external hard drive using usb connections either 2.0 or 3.0

and what problems might they cause? eg stuttering , slow data transfer etc I'm thinking of trying dcs or xplane on a portable hd with either a 2.0 or 3.0 connection (I have drives with both types)

Save yourself some grief, disappointment, time & frustration...don't bother. The end result is not worth the effort, for the very reasons you asked about.

 

You would do better adding another internal drive.

For testing it is fine, for performance sensitive uses.. not so much..

If you running FSX or any other sim on an external hard drive, you may want that it to be USB 3.0 for a faster transfer rate, and hopefully that usb wire does not come unplugged

I run P3D -2.4 from an external drive (Trancend)  USB 3, it's absolutley fine!
