December 25, 201411 yr Microsoft's compilers have always produced more efficient code as they have been developed in line with PC development and as the programmers become more expert in working the optimisation techniques -- it gets mind-blowingly complex with pipe-lining and many alternative ways of doing the same things. I was originally a machine / assembly code programmer, and even with all my experience, dating back over 50 years, there's no way I could code assembly code to a more efficient level than these compilers -- and they get better year on year. Happy Christmas! Pete Absolutely Positively! Predictive branch, out of order sequencing, and a myriad of other optimization nuances these compilers implement for contemporary processors is astounding from a hand assembler coding perspective. Just for this reason alone I'm working on a FSX-SE install environment on my test system which will eventually replace my "production" system's install. I'm hoping that a symbolic link can be used in the steam SteamApps/common for the FSX folder such that I can move FSX to a dedicated SSD, as I do now for my existing install. December 25, 201411 yr I think one would be hard pressed to get an OOM with a 'virgin' FSX install with little or no addons too. Same goes with FSX-SE. In fact, FSX will run amazingly fast with default settings and textures. You throw in optimized textures, like GEX, and FSX runs even faster and smooother. When you add commercial airports and scenery with a lot of eye-candy, then I think you'll start seeing a whole lot more usage of the small amount of VAS that is allowed for 32 bit applications and stuttering and some blurries. I seem to remember we all thought P3D was great too until we started porting over the commercial eye-candy stuff (scenery and aircraft). Best regards, Did you see my benchmark thread? FSDT KLAX, a high quality Kont and Klgb both mega airports with completely custom textures and polys, FTX Vector, FTX Global, and a high poly Aerosim 787. All sliders the right at 2560x1440. Doing traffic patterns at 250 kn between them 3 will give you an OOM in FSX under lesser conditions 100% of the time. No stock installs here.
December 25, 201411 yr I gave FSX:SE a try and I must say, so far I am satisfied! I wasn't expecting the sim to run significantly better nor anything like that, I had my FSX heavily modified and running as smooth as a 32bit mem hogger can. Use it daily on VATSIM and mostly use PMDGs. But there where good reasons for giving it a chance such as: + I am really tired of the DVDs and losing my key. + Already have steam with over 100 titles, and over 80 friends, don't mind having FSX in my steam game library. + $5 USD? Nice... + Steam offers me video streaming, so I can show my friends and convince them to join the sim community. (Being sold on steam makes it even easier, already 5 of my friends on my list bough it because of this.) + The steam multiplayer makes it very easy to start up a game with my friends and let them get the hang of the sim. + Participate in the birth of a new younger sim community. So I tried it, and I must say, it does run smoother on higher settings! A little bit but it is noticeable. What about my add-ons? Well, I managed to install and run pretty much all of them! (ORBX, REX, EZDOK, all of my CARENADO/A2A/CPN SIM planes, all of my Aerosoft airports.) Except for my PMDGs and FSPassengers. I am bummed about that, but im sure PMDG will support FSX:SE very soon. I can even keep flying on VATSIM with VPILOT, even the model matching worked great! I trully gained more than what I lost, which I should re-gain soon enough. I already uninstalled my boxed version of FSX and I strongly doubt Ill be installing it again. For $5 USD, it was without a doubt a great deal! Smo Huffmister
