Auto-applied config tweaks in FSX-Steam

Recommended Posts

I was just in the process of re-installing several FSDT airport sceneries in FSX-SE, and activating them using the Couatl add-on manager, when I realized that the manager gives some insight into the various configuration tweaks that have been globally applied.

It was already known that the HIMEMFIX tweak had been compiled-in to the new Steam executable, so that it is no longer necessary to add it in FSX.CFG, and indeed HIGHMEMFIX shows "on".

The Couatl screen also shows some of the other things that have been done.

In original FSX, I had to manually add a processor affinity mask into FSX.CFG under [JOBSCHEDULER}. Since I have a 4-core CPU without HT, the recommended choice was a mask of "14". Couatl shows that this mask has already been applied automatically, without a specific CFG entry. I presume that one could over-ride this, though 14 has always worked well for me, so I will leave it be.

ForceFullScreenVsync  is "on" by default - no need to specify it in FSX.CFG.

Some other default values shown include:

Use Bufferpools "ON", with a default pool size of 5 MB

SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT = 10

Terrain max trees per cell is set to 4.5 KB, and max buildings to 3.0 KB - I believe that these were the default in original FSX too.

Just thought I'd pass this along for what it's worth.

Interesting find there Jim. Thanks for that. I normally set vsync via NV inspector, wonder if the would overide the inbuilt setting.

I believe UsePools=1 is the default value, perhaps hard coded inside the simulator and modifiers in the cfg are supported.  Why?  When I use the default fsx-se.cfg in DX9 everything looks great.  If I add UsePools=0, in no time at all I'm getting loads of scenery flashes and spikes.  I use to get those in regular MS FSX also.  Therefore it would seem the default is to use pools, and it can be overridden.

However DX10 is another matter entierly. UsePools=0 works much better for me than it does in DX9, I've no idea why.

As always, you should proceed with caution when changing parameters for a new (or at least changed) software system.

I see people charging ahead, and applying every tweak they have heard about from the FSX-MS days.. without any testing, or evidence that it is going to be beneficial..

If u are using usepool=0

In dx9 you need to set water 2xhigh to not get any flashes

As stated it Kostas tweaking guide

That is what i use. And is fine
