Converting FSX content to Flight

Recommended Posts

@ KavindaJD: Wow, amazing screenshots!

I could not resist to add a few of my own from my favourite FSX->Flight scenery: Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) on Saint Maarten. As you can see, there are birds around some of the coastal and bay objects (e.g., the frigate and the lighthouse). There are also some excellent places to slalom and park the Icon A5!

In fact, perhaps we should start a separate screenshot thread as testament to stonelance et al.s' work?

I'm not finding a ContentErrors.log file anywhere, so I'm guessing the conversion process ran as expected with no errors other than those you pointed out.

I am pretty sure this is not a problem with my PC running Flight; I've never had any issues with it and I have flown in a lot of the graphically intense areas with the modification such as New York, Washington D.C. and Seattle, to name a few. None of these areas caused any problems or crashes; the second time I visited SF I did turn down some graphics settings as a test and still got the crash. I will try again and see what happens.

All of the areas I've visited look great btw; very pleased with what you've accomplished for Flight users.

Thanks again...

One other thing: I ran the conversion process only on the original FSX installation, with no SP's installed nor FSX Acceleration, as it was/is my understanding this had to be done only on a clean install of the original FSX program. Am I correct on this?

ContentErrors.log is in %appdata%\Microsoft\Flight and contains errors that are generated by Flight while it attempts to load content (e.g. while you're flying).

OK, just finished trying to run Flight in the SF area to begin a flight instead of starting somewhere else and then moving to the SF area where the crash would occur.

Flight would load content and about 2/3's of the way into the process crash; I adjusted graphics option way down and tried again, same result. Then started Flight in a different scenery area and program ran fine. Moved back to SF, program crashed. Then began Flight again in SF area and crash occurred again. Thanks Orion for the tip, I found the ContentErrors.log and the last several lines say this:

(37.805067, -122.240693): Terrain texture not found: 029B2WI7DL.DDS (dir=88)

(37.805067, -122.240693): Terrain texture not found: 029B2WI4DL.DDS (dir=88)

(37.805067, -122.240693): Terrain texture not found: 029B2WI6DL.DDS (dir=88)

(37.805067, -122.240693): Terrain texture not found: 029B2WI3DL.DDS (dir=88)

(37.805067, -122.240693): MaterialVariation has an animating model, but the instance type is not set to 'No Instance Data', which is currently not supported.

(37.805067, -122.240693): LOD '3' contains no meshes. Only the lowest LOD is allowed to have no meshes.

(37.805067, -122.240693): Model 'SanFra_GOLDEN' failed to load.

So, this is what is causing the SF area crash. If you can point me in the right direction and tell what to rerun to fix this I'll be grateful, and I hope this helps.

Thanks again, Ken

Ken

That doesn't mean it caused the crash but it may have.

You can run the conversion with the acceleration pack installed, I just meant no 3rd party scenery.

@jarsky - Nice Screenshots! You're not too bad yourself at capturing the detail! Great work!

In fact, perhaps we should start a separate screenshot thread as testament to stonelance et al.s' work?

A sound idea! Maybe we should wait for Rick... it all goes under this thread so we could have a mix of screenshots and support.

I tried a Flight around the SF area and no bridges were showing up. However, I could still fly around the area with no problems. As far as I'm concerned, no bridges were converted and were simply skipped, that's why there are no model errors.I think if Steve gets the Extrusion Bridges supported in the conversion, you should be fine.

If extrusion Bridges weren't supported in the first place, I don't see why Flight would be looking for an unconverted file.

The Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge aren't extrusion bridges; they're custom models. Try checking your scenery settings -- perhaps set them to the highest settings temporarily to see if the bridges appear.

Okay, here's what I attempted late last night.

I removed the new World scenery data for Flight in DLC, and all of the converted scenery in the temp folder. I then re-ran ContentConverter and re-built everything, all without issues.

I then enabled FSX World and started Flight, and tried to start a flight in the SF area again. Once again, the program crashed. I re-started and went to a different area, and all worked properly.

I have tried to paste the ContentErrors.log here but for some reason the forum won't let me. Don't know what that's about, the previous post I made about the error I had to type in from scratch; not going to do that this time. The log mainly states it can't find terrain textures, 3 requested assets and MaterialVariations for autogen. Hope that helps, and if someone will tell me why I can't paste text into a forum reply and I can fix it I would appreciate it.

I want to point out that I am trying to post info on an error I am getting to be helpful, not complaining because I'm getting an error and crashes. I am very appreciative of the hard work that has been put into this effort, and just want to help in some small way so the process can be made easier for Stonelance and the others helping on it. I hope I'm clear on this.

Thanks again!

Hi BaronKen.

The conversion can be done on FSX sp2, FSX:SE or acceleration. I wonder if you would have the same problem with one of those conversions?

Also, what are your computer specs for memory, graphics, and operating system (Windows7-64bit?)?

Dick

Guys, it's not my PC, but I'll post my specs all the same:

Intel i7 3820 @ 3.6 Ghz

12 GB Ram

2TB HDD

Nvidia 660 @ 2 GB ram

Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit

When I get the time I'll see about SP2.

Thanks

If you know how to use BBCode, just use the "[code" function and paste your log in there.

When replying click on the top left icon in the editor to use "BBCode Mode"

Eg: In the BBCode editor type:

[code]
<paste the contents of the log here>
[/code]

Hey Ken have you got space for one more because I'm in the same boat as you!

J.D. I hate to see that; I'm right now in the process of re-doing the FSX install and adding FSX:Acceleration, and then will re-run the ContentCreator to convert it all for Flight to see what happens.

I'll post later when it's all complete and check to see if I still get the same error and crash.

BTW, my content error log looked similar to yours, except it had could not load some terrain textures.

(And thanks for the tip on using BBCode to paste text)

BTW, my content error log looked similar to yours, except it had could not load some terrain textures.

No Problem and I hope it works out for you! All the best!

The reason why we have different textures missing is due to differences in Lat and Long - possibly.

In the meantime, I think this isn't working due to our versions of FSX. Looking at the log, Flight is looking for 6 .DDS files which are incorrectly named. I don't know what the missing assets are. Also, in the ObjectBrowser, SanFra_GOLDEN refuses to preview.

The only solution I could think of is if someone could lend us their working version of the addon. It'll enable me to look at exactly what is not being converted correctly.

     Any help is appreciated!
