May 14, 200521 yr I note Flight 1 supports only WinXP users. However, has anyone tried it using Win9x? If the program is just replacing existing default textures with superior why would it not run on 9x?My FS2004 runs flawlessly with 100% stability on a Win98 FS-dedicated PC but, unfortunately, much as I'd love to have upgraded, both WinXP Home and Pro proved utterly incapable of handling all the complexities of my homebuilt cockpit so I won't be changing.I posted this same query to the Flight 1 Support Forum In April and the reply I received was as follows:"The installer may not work but we may be able to get it going for you? Tom will need to reply to this one."Unfortunately, Tom never got around to it.At the recent Avsim Survey there were 452 users of Win9x - that's a potential $10,000 in sales :-)So, did anyone try it in Win9x?Pat
May 14, 200521 yr Hi there, I didnt see your post at the flight 1 forum but I'll pass this on to Peter Wilding and I'm sure he'll ask the correct people the correct questions....
May 15, 200521 yr Hi There,The problem here will be the installer, not the clouds as you point out.I'll have a talk with Steve and see what we can do. It may be that it does work with other versions of Windows but I'm not sure.Peter
May 15, 200521 yr Author Thanks, Peter.Looking forward to your final word on this matter.Maybe you could have a separate download for 9x users with just the textures. After all, those of us still using 9x are likely to be experienced enough to install them ourselves :-)Pat
May 19, 200521 yr Author OK, now that you've all kissed and made up can we get back to something much more important. Will the (at least) 462 Win9x users be allowed to gain access to this sensational, fantastic, unbelievable, incredible, awesome, beautiful, unrivalled addon? :-)Just a simple answer will do. One of two.1. N0.2. Yes and we will advise when it is ready.Pat
May 19, 200521 yr I believe the Flight 1 policy is that Windows 9X is unsupported - so if you run into problems using the old windows, that's your problem. Most users use Windows XP and that's what they test for. It doesn't mean you can't try. The only products that won't work for you are the new Reality XP gauges and the products that use them (Dreamfleet Bonanza) since they have XP specific DLL's. Keep in mind Flight1 has a 30 day return policy so you could try it and if it doesn't work return it.
May 19, 200521 yr Author David, thanks for your input. The gauge/XP dlls problem doesn't affect me because, as mentioned earlier, I have a homebuilt flight deck with my own instrument panels which all work perfectly in '98.Flight 1 appear to believe that it's only the installer for FE that COULD cause a problem and not the textures themselves. I was rather hoping that the lads would borrow a '98 PC and just run the installer to see what happens :-) and report back. Mind you, I could always become a '98 Beta tester ;-)>>Keep in mind Flight1 has a 30 day return policyThat's interesting - didn't know that - a definite plus for Flight1.Pat
May 19, 200521 yr just out of curiosity, did you repost this over at the F1 support forum, if not, I can ask for you there......I know peter is probably working on this but hitting from two sep angles is sometime more effective
May 19, 200521 yr I have 98SE on my home system and up until (and including) the release of the Flight1 172, I've never had an issue with their wrapper/installer. But certain gauges and dll's can have issues under 98SE--regardless I've bought products and when worse has come to worse, I've disabled gauges with issues which only number as a handful.I'll go out on a limb and say you should be safe in installing FE under 98, and Flight1 will support you if you find you can't and take the appropriate steps if a refund is the only option.-John
May 19, 200521 yr Author Hi Spooky,No, I didn't repost over there. The original post is still there under "Flight Environment Query" in April. I thought I'd have better luck here since everyone is raving about it, some '98'ers might even have tried it and Peter is heavily involved.Maybe they're still looking for a '98 machine to run it on and can't find one ;-)Pat
May 19, 200521 yr Did somebody get nasty again in the other FE post?I tried to get it from email notification and it was missing. Guess it got deleted.Amazing how these posts can deterioate sometimes. Hard to believe when we are discussing "fps", for heaven's sake. Now let's move on to world politics and the role of the United States . . . ;) Wilson
May 19, 200521 yr Wilson,When a thread is deleted, please don't try to move the controversy to another one. Here we are just trying to help out another user.-John
May 19, 200521 yr Thanks for the guidance, John.I will take that as confirmation that the post WAS, in fact, deleted, and not an error in the link. It seemed to be a reasonably civil post the last time that I read it yesterday.Wilson
May 21, 200521 yr Commercial Member Although we did not try it with Win98, I do not see a reason as to why it would not work. You may need to make sure GDI+ is installed, but that is likely already done. Thanks, Steve Halpern Flight One Software
