Is this how REX4 & ASN clouds should look like in P3D?

Featured Replies

did you guys ever tried width .6 and height .5

I'm using 0.61 ... 0.50 is the "default" value ... the closer you approach to 1.0 the larger the clouds and the more demanding on performance.  What I find as a good compromise is 0.60 to 0.75 range and reducing the Cloud Density slider in P3D to Medium.

Has anyone tried using different width multiplier vs. height multiplier?

something like this:

Cloud.fx

Line 293

GetScreenQuadPositions( quad, width*0.75, height*0.50 );

Would be interested in your results.

Cheers, Rob.

EDIT: I enjoy having this much flexibility with what P3D can offer ... I know some prefer to "just fly" and have a single simple solution ... but as demonstrated in various threads no two people seem to agree on what clouds should look like ... heck some folks have even said "those clouds look terrible" on a picture taken from a real world aircraft.  I do hope LM make all these options something that can be configured via the UI so folks can go to town on making their definition of the "perfect" clouds.

  • Sir, this is one of the best looking sky I have ever seen. May I ask what textures you've used in your pics? Oh and thanks for your tweak, it made things a lot better!

G ´day Rob

I tried w.65 h.5 the clouds got a little to flat. For me i will not go over .7 cause if you have an overcast condition then the clouds might touch the ground.

I will post some vids tomorrow. Anyway the soft clouds combined with multiplier >0.5 in width will give great visuals IMHO.

Yes, and it looks odd; though it depends on the ratio. I could be a way to widen clouds, ridding them of that thin look, with far north latitudes, but probably too much hassle.

I have found a cloud multiplier of 0.6 and an ASN cloud layer of 5 to be the sweet spot for my system using soft clouds.  I set my cloud draw distance to 75 miles and visibility max to 70 miles for what I have read is a more realistic value (this can vary greatly and depend on a lot of factors).  I think the visibility and cloud draw distance has more of an impact than cloud layers.

The cloud multiplier is the only manual, config type tweak that I currently use with P3D.  I am also using 4x SGSS in NI.

G´day folks,

here´s a small video showing different texture sizes within the sim. I started with default 0.5 and ended up @ 0.75. I based the test on the "Building Storms" theme as well as actual weather generated by ASN and OpusFSI. Rex Soft Clouds set 1 were used through out the test.

See for yourself...

Same here values from 0.60 - 0.65 in width and 0.50 - 0.54 in height are a good match for ASN. Using OpusFSI i would stay @ default. OpusFSI has a high impact in performance.

I used the "high" settings you recommended on your website, and I must say, I gained about 10fps and my sim looks great. Thank you! After installing soft clouds, I found the Orbx presets to be the most pleasing to my eye. I tend to get the most "popcorn" when using ASN live weather, unfortunately. Hopefully this will change in the future.

Thanks so much for that. Aside from being very informative, it was nice to watch. Fun camera work. I will use the info to further tweak my soft clouds.

Hi Aaron,

thanks for the coment on youtube :) I tried the ORBX 5 Theme liked it a lot :) BTW i tried to raise the height to 0.54 but it is not as notiable. I´ll stay at height 0.50 as it is less likely that the textures touches the ground.

  • 1 year later...

Hey Guys, this post is already some months old but I hope you dont mind me adding another question. Was this Problem ever solved? I have installed P3d 3.1 and AS SP4.1 and I get the same strange behavior. Now it is not the best way to compare real time weather with any P3D weather theme but I dont have any other weather engine to compare with. This is what I get: Many small clouds repeating at same height. Second screen is with ASN off.

Here is why...

In the screenshot I used a cloud texture with characters and numbers.

Great shots
