Should I buy a Graphics Card?

I have a very old machine that was purchased in 2007. It has and Intel Q6600 and an old gt8800 ultra inside it. I really want to upgrade to get better frames per second in FSX but I am currently stuck on a budget until later this year. I don't know if I should upgrade my graphics card just now to a 750ti or wait until later this year when my budget will rise and get a new processor, motherboard and RAM alongside the graphics card?

If your going to upgrade than wait till you get extra cash and get  the lot replaced  but that's up to you to decide.

yep, the Q6600 is a bit old and slow for FSX.  You may get something out of overclocking if you want to take the risk.  You should be able to get 3.0 to 3.2 GHz out of it.

 

My Q9550 has ben running at around 3.8 GHz for several years now quite happily.

 

Broadly, the % overclock of the CPU will translate to the same % additional frame rate, thus if you are getting 20 fps at 2.4 GHz, you should get around 25 fps at 3 GHz.

 

FSX is affected far more by CPU grunt than it is by the graphics card (unlike FS9 or its predecessors).

 

I really wouldn't waste any money on a new graphics card for that machine.

Ye I think I am just going to wait until I get extra money since FSX requires on the CPU more than the graphics card. Thanks for the help but.

I have a similar system, Q9650 and a 8800GT factory overclock.  I run my CPU at 3.8 GHz and 4 GB of RAM at 850 MHz.  It runs ok, and I've thought about upgrading, but with Windows XP 32-bit, it is really not a cost effective option.  For me, the upgrade will mean a new system with a 64 bit operating system and 8 GB of RAM.  Swapping in a better video card may help a little, but I doubt it will be the answer to a better sim experience.
