Why would the RAT be down?

This picture on Wikipedia shows a deployed RAT in what appears to be normal flight. Is there any reason a RAT would be deployed for anything other than a failed engine/generator scenario? Is Alitalia "going green"?

Good spotting. I'm going take a stab and say it's CofA annual flight testing. I used to be involved doing some of this ay my previous carrier, and functional testing of RAT deployment was on the checklist.

I have one rule in the 777 cockpit... don't touch the glass-covered buttons till a checklist tells me to do it. :smile:

Ahh, ok, that makes sense. The only thing I could think of was that they were showing off for a chase camera. But then I though "gee, what an odd choice to show deployed emergency equipment in marketing materials." Your explanation is alot more rational. Thanks Ken.

If you follow the link to the image source (A.net) the remarks say "Low level flypast of 02L as the last phase of the air test." The picture was taken in Singapore so presumably the aircraft had been under maintenance there.

Yes, can deploy it manually above the hydraulic switches on the O/H panel, or in the FMC
