So far, it's one of the most frustrated experience I ever had with an 3rd party addons

Recommended Posts

Claude-

When you opted in to the purchase, we required that you acknowledge that the product had not been tested with Win8 or Win8.1....  We put that there because we happen to have a massive sum of knowledge about simming- and we also know that Win8 is a quagmire for simmers.

I know it is fashionable for people to presume that we don't know what we are talking about- but heck... this is what we do.  We have forgotten more about it than most people know!

Now- two things for you:

1) We don't have the bandwidth to help Win8 users troubleshoot problems caused by their OS.  Right now we are focused on resolving issues for customers who are on know-stable OSs...  Once we get things stabilized- we will have some time to work through some of the issues a few others are having- but I have to tell you that slapping us around and blaming the problem on us when we took the time to research and make recommendations to our customers is a bit unfair.  I recognize that you are frustrated because you want the thing to work- but remember that this is our blood-sweat-and-tears and we want it to work for you just as badly as you do... Work with us and you might get help even though you are outside the parameters.  Slap us around and...  well...  we're human.

2) I strongly encourage you to spend some time reading up on what other simmers have done to get Win8.1 to support FSX and our products effectively.  A few members of our team have recently converted to WIn8.1 and they report things to be running just fine- so that leads me to believe that there are some things you can do to resolve the problem...   Read and share information is what this forum is about.  Help each other- and we will jump in to help you guys where we can...

Sometimes- you might even find yourself being the guy who comes up with "The Answer" and we all benefit...  that is what the forum is for.

Okay- last item:  We are clamping down hard on folks who don't sign their posts in this forum...  Please please please set up a signature to automatically sign your posts.  You are already frustrated with us and I would hate to have to remove your posts from the forum and in effect throw gas on the fire...

Work with us...  we'll do almost anything to help you.  Ask around- you will find that to be true.

Hi Robert,

I mad at the situation. I made a mistake. I am human after all. I came up with an half-&@($* workaround using a combination of FSUIPC and some simconnect library version but it not really what I called fully operational. I can't change focus, the wheel mouse doesn't work. It's already hard enough to try to figure out a PMDG 777 as a new customer. I don't mind giving money to a company that give their sweat and blood to their product. I was reading your forums for weeks in anticipation of last night release. All I saw was wonderful customer experience. I never even occur in mind for 1 sec that I didn't work with windows 8.1 Heck, I've read many people have managed to make it work. It just doesn't for me. After spending 12 hours of troubleshooting and even installing a fresh new windows. I am exhausted and drain of all my energy. Not counting the amount of money that I spent that I won't be able to use unless I dual boot Win 7 or downgrade. After the pain, I went through today, I don't think I want to give it another shot.

It is an 100% related to simconnect libraries and Win 8.1 I wiped my PC and install a fresh windows copy. If I don't install any of the simconnect libraries, The plane load but none of the buttons and screen works. I think this is how PMDG interact with the flightsim. If I install the latest simconnect library from the FSX:SE edition, I get the button and screen back but the second I lose focus on the FSX windows, I lose my controller in FSX. This is an FSX/Simconnect issue. In the meantime, my controller is an 100% working in windows at all times. It's not power management or any other crap like this. I spent over 12 hours troubleshooting and doing many test. I was able to repeat this process multiple time and this is how I came to this conclusion.

I bought the game based on everyone loving praise about PMDG product and I never even cross my mind that It wasn't windows 8 compatible. Now I am 153 canadian dollars in the hole for a product that I can't really use properly.

Did you install the legacy versions of simconnect? Over the course of the production run of pre-Steam FSX, there were three distinct versions of simconnect, one for original (2006) FSX, one for SP1, and one for SP2/Acceleration. In addition, the Steam version FSX installs its own, new version of simconnect.

Many, if not most add-ons written for pre-Steam FSX, will require one of the three legacy versions of simconnect to work properly. DTG made these available in the SDK folder of FSX-SE, but unfortunately, they did not automatically install them as part of the process of installing FSX-SE itself. Users have to install them manually.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder on the drive where you installed FSX-SE:

steamapps\common\FSX\SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnectSDK\LegacyInterfaces

In the "LegacyInterfaces" folder will be three more folders called: FSX-RTM, FSX-SP1 and FSX-XPACK. Each of those folders contain several files - but the one you want is SimConnect.msi.

Run the SimConnect.msi installer in each of the three folders in turn. When you have done so, you will now have all four versions of simconnect.dll installed on your system - the very newest version that came with FSX-SE, plus the three legacy versions that came with the different versions of original FSX.

I can't gaurantee that this will solve your particular simconnect problem, but I have been working with some other users here on the forums who were having various simconnect errors with FSX add-ons in Steam, and installing the three legacy simconnect DLLs fixed their errors in every case.

It is perfectly OK to install multiple versions of simconnect in Windows by the way, as they make use of the WinSXS (side by side) system, which is specifically designed for making multiple versions of the same DLL available to programs that may depend on them.

Thanks - saw this mentioned in another post and I've just tried it. My 777 now appears to be working in FSX:SE under Win8.1x64.

Thank you for your consideration. I did install all 4 version of simconnect.  I am in a somewhat workable state right now. I do lose my controller if I change focus from FSX to another windows but thanks to FSUIPC, I retain all my controls. So now I am back to how the hell can I optimized FSX so the PDMG plane doesn't eat all the FPS away. I think i can live with that.

I appreciate everyone who didn't give up on me. I was able to take my first flight this morning and even thought I was new to the plane, it was painless from there (except for the 15fps). Coming from the Ramzess Boeing 777 on X-plane 10, I felt right at home.

The rest of the world is on Windows 8.1

Not true. According to Microsoft more than half of all desktop PCs are on Windows 7 and 20% are still on XP.
