P3D and Windows 10

Recommended Posts

Obviously Windows 10 is still under development, but does anybody know if LM development plans include Windows 10?

They skipped 8 and 8.1 not surprising IMO, but 10 does look promising.

Thanks!

Windows 10 sounds good, but directX 12 is what I'm excited about.  Simply put, it will mean no more stutters!!!

While we’ve been through the issues of DX11 (and other high level API’s) before in great detail, in a nutshell their issue is simple. They’ve not been designed from the ground up for modern multi-core CPU’s. Yes, technically a game engine could run over let’s say half a dozen cores (and some such as BF4 do just that), but you’ll find one CPU cores typically has a significantly higher amount of usage than others. That’s because DirectX 11’s renderer is being run on solely that one core – meaning it’s bottlenecking performance. If the core stalls for any reason, either because it’s busy, waiting for a result of a calculation (from GPGPU), because your Anti-virus decides now is the perfect time to run that scan you’ve been putting off for the last three weeks, or simply because another program runs in the background, frame rates will drop.

But what they're not admitting is that it is probably Windows 10 that will actually make the changes.  Microsoft's current implementation of fibers is a very poor one.

I'm most exited about DX12 as well, but I'm simply curious about OS compatibility.

P3D with DX12 would probably involve an almost total rewrite of the rendering engine akin to recoding instruction sets for a 64-bit version. These aren't switch flippers as most seem to think.....

I dream of P3D 64-bit DX12 and SLI *stirs the pot*

It will require them to re-write the whole engine but the days of CPU bottleneck will be gone. In x-plane 10, my cpu is running at 35% utilization and that's because my cpu is probably waiting for  the GPU. Imagine if it was multithreading.  P3D would like a smooth as a baby's buttock.

You could always ask on the forums at http://www.prepar3d.com

I'd suggest that too. It would be interesting to see the thoughts from the devs (I'd think this is one of those revolutionaly changes that unlocks so much potential).

BTW, DX12 is now included (but sitting dormant) in the latest build of Windows 10...!
